The straight answer
The best time to visit Idaho is July through September for the Sawtooths and its wild rivers, or January through March for Sun Valley snow; skip the slushy shoulders in April and November.
For the Idaho most people picture, alpine lakes under the Sawtooths, whitewater on the Salmon, hot springs at dusk, come July through September. The high country melts out late here; even early July can hold snow on passes, and September may be the best month of all, with golden light, no mosquitoes, and Redfish Lake gone quiet. Winter is the other real season: Sun Valley invented the destination ski resort, and January through March is its prime.
Like its mountain neighbors, Idaho has in-between months that flatter nobody. April is melt and mud, November is gray limbo before the lifts spin, and both are better spent in Boise, which stays mild and lively while the ranges sort themselves out. One more honest note: late summer wildfire smoke can dull the views some years, so keep an eye on air quality if August is your month.

Summer
The main event: 80s F valleys, cool alpine nights, peak rafting in June and July, and lakes warm enough by August. Book Stanley and Redfish Lake lodging far ahead; there is very little of it.
Fall
September is superb, with aspen gold, crisp air, and empty trails; early October still shines. By November the state is waiting for snow and short on reasons to visit.
Winter
Sun Valley is the marquee, with world-class grooming and an unpretentious town in Ketchum. Deep cold snaps are real, and mountain driving requires respect, but January through March skis beautifully.
