What August is like in Seoul

August brings steamy heat as the rains ease, with highs near 86F (30C) and heavy humidity. Koreans take their vacations now, so beach trains fill up, while the city itself stays workable if you pace your day. Crowds and prices are moderate.

It is a mixed month. Families on summer break can do fine by planning mornings outside and afternoons in air conditioning, malls, or water parks, with plenty of cold drinks. If you want comfortable weather for walking and hiking, wait for mid September through October, when the humidity breaks and the best season begins.

Make the most of August

What is especially good about Seoul this month.

01

Night life by the river

Evenings are the best part of an August day. The Han River parks fill with people after dark when it cools a little.

02

Bingsu breaks

Shaved ice stops are the local way to survive the heat, and there are cafes for it on almost every block.

03

Hongdae after dark

Street performers and late-night food make the evenings lively once the midday heat fades.

What to pack for August

  • Light, breathable clothes
  • A portable fan or cooling towel
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • A compact umbrella for passing storms

Our timing tip

Beat the crowds

  • See the palaces at 9am opening or in the last two hours; midday belongs to tour groups, and Bukchon's lanes are quietest before breakfast.
  • For cherry blossoms, walk Yeouido at sunrise or choose quieter stretches along the Han River tributaries over the festival core.
  • Never plan intercity travel during Seollal or Chuseok without tickets booked the moment they release; those are the country's two travel crushes.
  • Book the Secret Garden, DMZ tours, and popular Korean barbecue houses days to weeks ahead in spring and fall.

Know before you go

  • Seollal and Chuseok (dates shift yearly on the lunar calendar) close many small restaurants and shops for two to four days while department stores shorten hours; major palaces and museums typically stay open with holiday programming.
  • Most royal palaces close one day a week (Gyeongbokgung on Tuesdays, most others on Mondays); pair your palace days accordingly.
  • The jangma monsoon (roughly late June through July) cancels outdoor plans without notice; Seoul's answer is an unmatched indoor bench of museums, malls, and saunas.
  • DMZ tours run on government schedules and can suspend without warning when border conditions change; book refundable and early in your stay so a canceled day can slide.
