The straight answer
The best time to visit Zanzibar is June through October, the cool dry season, with late December through February a hotter but equally dry second window; skip April and May, when the long rains soak the island and many beach hotels close.
Go June through October. The southeast trade winds keep the island breezy and dry, highs sit near 82F (28C), humidity is at its lowest, and the Indian Ocean is clear for snorkeling around Mnemba Atoll. It is also the natural end to a dry-season safari in the Serengeti, which is why July and August are the island's busiest and most expensive months.
Late December through February is the second window: hot, often near 90F (32C), humid, with calm seas and the kaskazi wind from the northeast that kitesurfers chase on the east coast. The short rains of November are usually brief and patchy. The long rains, roughly late March through May, are a different story: heavy daily downpours, rough seas, and a scattering of hotels that shut for weeks. That is the one window to avoid.
Two details catch first-timers out. First, the east coast beaches around Paje and Jambiani have a huge tidal range: the sea retreats hundreds of yards at low tide, and seaweed farming fills the flats. If swimming at any tide matters, stay in the north around Nungwi and Kendwa. Second, Zanzibar is overwhelmingly Muslim. During Ramadan, which moves about 11 days earlier each year, many Stone Town restaurants close by day and the pace slows; resorts carry on as normal.

Why go to Zanzibar
Stone Town
A UNESCO-listed maze of coral-stone houses, carved wooden doors, mosques, and bazaars shaped by Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European traders over centuries. It is one of East Africa's most atmospheric old towns.
White sand and turquoise water
The north and east coasts have classic Indian Ocean beaches, with dhow sailing, snorkeling, and diving on nearby reefs and atolls.
The perfect safari finish
Zanzibar is a short flight from Arusha and the northern Tanzania parks and from Dar es Salaam, making it the standard beach extension after a Serengeti safari.
Spice-island culture
Clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon plantations, Swahili cooking, and taarab music give Zanzibar a cultural depth most beach destinations lack.
Things to do, and when to do them
Stone Town
Walk it early before the heat and tour groups. The Old Fort, the former slave market site at Christ Church, and the Forodhani Gardens night food market at sunset are the essentials.
Mnemba Atoll snorkeling
Clear water, reef fish, turtles, and dolphin sightings off the northeast coast. Seas are calmest outside the long rains; morning trips beat the afternoon wind.
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park
The best place to see the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, plus a mangrove boardwalk. An easy half-day from anywhere on the island.
A spice farm tour
Taste cloves, vanilla, cardamom, and nutmeg straight from the plant, usually combined with a local lunch. Good for all ages.
Nungwi and Kendwa beaches
On the northern tip, with swimmable water at nearly all tides and the island's best sunsets. Busy in peak season.
Paje and Jambiani
East coast lagoons with low-key guesthouses, seaweed farms, and some of Africa's best kitesurfing. Tides retreat far out; plan swims around high tide.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Serengeti safari and Zanzibar beach combo
Roughly July through October for river crossings; January to February for calving
Zanzibar's two dry windows line up almost exactly with the Great Migration's headline acts, which is why most beach-and-bush itineraries are built around them.
Sauti za Busara
Usually February
A multi-day African music festival held at the Old Fort in Stone Town in most years. Check the current year's program before building a trip around it.
Zanzibar International Film Festival
Typically late June into July
Films, music, and arts events across Stone Town, focused on Africa and the Indian Ocean world.
Mwaka Kogwa
July, following the traditional Shirazi new year
A new year festival in the southern village of Makunduchi, with mock fights, a ritual hut burning, songs, and feasting.
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr
Moves about 11 days earlier each year
Many Stone Town restaurants close during daylight during Ramadan and visitors are asked to dress and eat discreetly in town. Eid brings celebrations and busy streets. It spans roughly February into March in 2027, then drifts into January and February by the end of the decade.
Beat the crowds
- Aim for September, October, or early June: dry-season weather with noticeably lower rates and fewer groups than July and August.
- Do Stone Town at dawn and after sunset. Midday brings the heat and the day-tripping cruise and tour groups.
- Book Mnemba snorkeling for the first boat of the morning, before the calmest water turns choppy and the boats multiply.
- Stay on the quieter southeast or southwest coasts rather than Nungwi if you want space; the north is the island's busiest strip.
Open or closed
- Several beach hotels and guesthouses close for part of April and May, during the long rains. Check before booking in those months.
- During Ramadan, many Stone Town restaurants close by day, and some bars and nightlife close entirely. Resorts continue normal service.
- The east coast's huge tidal range means swimming is only practical around high tide at Paje, Jambiani, and similar beaches; the north coast is much less affected.
- Zanzibar has required visitors to buy a mandatory local inbound travel insurance policy since late 2024; check the current rule before travel, in addition to Tanzania's visa requirements.
With kids in tow
- Stay on the north coast with small children: swimmable water at all tides beats the east coast's long walks out to the sea.
- Jozani's colobus monkeys, Prison Island's giant tortoises, and spice farm tastings are easy half-day wins with kids.
- Zanzibar is in a malaria area. Ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis, and use repellent and nets, especially in the rainy months.
- Dress modestly in Stone Town and villages, covering shoulders and knees; swimwear belongs at the beach and resort only. It is a good lesson in cultural respect for older kids.
Getting there
- Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) has connections via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi, and short flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and the Serengeti airstrips.
- From the US, connect through a Middle Eastern hub or Addis Ababa; from Texas, Qatar Airways and Emirates connections via Doha or Dubai are common routings.
- Fast ferries run between Dar es Salaam and Stone Town several times a day, taking about two hours.

Zanzibar timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit Zanzibar?
September. Dry, sunny, and breezy, with warm water and fewer crowds than July and August. January and February are the best of the hot-season months.
When is the rainy season in Zanzibar?
The long rains fall roughly late March through May, with April the wettest month. The short rains arrive around November and are usually brief afternoon showers.
What is the cheapest time to visit Zanzibar?
April and May, the long rains, when rates drop sharply but many hotels close and the weather is poor. For a better balance, November and early March offer lower prices with mostly fair weather.
Is Zanzibar too hot in February?
It is hot and humid, often near 91F (33C), but it is also dry and sunny with calm seas. With a breezy beachfront room and midday shade, most travelers find it very pleasant.
Can I combine a safari with Zanzibar?
Yes, and it is the classic Tanzania itinerary. Fly from the Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar in about an hour to an hour and a half. Both have dry seasons that line up in June to October and January to February.
Is it OK to visit Zanzibar during Ramadan?
Yes. Resorts run normally. In Stone Town, many restaurants close by day and you should avoid eating or drinking in public during daylight, but evenings are lively and it can be a rewarding time to visit.
