The straight answer
The best time to visit Mauritius is May through December, with September to November the sweet spot for dry, sunny, warm weather; January through March is hot, humid cyclone season, with February the riskiest month.
Go between May and December, and ideally September through November. The austral spring brings the island's driest, sunniest weather, highs near 81F (27C), warming seas, and prices that sit below the Christmas and European summer peaks. It is the most reliable beach weather of the year.
June through August is the Mauritian winter: highs near 75F (24C), cooler evenings, and the southeast trade winds at their strongest. The east and south coasts get breezy and choppy, which kitesurfers love around Le Morne, while the sheltered west and north coasts stay calm and sunny. Humpback whales pass the west coast roughly July through October.
January through March is summer: hot, humid, and the wettest stretch of the year, with highs near 86F (30C) and the peak of the southwest Indian Ocean cyclone season. Cyclones do not hit Mauritius every year, and many days are simply hot with afternoon storms, but a direct hit or near miss can bring days of rain, rough seas, and closures. February is the month most likely to go wrong. April is a solid shoulder month as the rains ease.

Why go to Mauritius
Lagoons ringed by reef
A near-continuous coral reef surrounds much of the island, creating calm, turquoise lagoons for swimming, snorkeling, and paddling right off the beach.
More than a beach
Volcanic peaks, Black River Gorges' rainforest trails, waterfalls, sugar-cane plantations, and tea estates give Mauritius a green interior most Indian Ocean islands lack.
A true cultural mix
Indian, African, French, and Chinese heritage shape the food, the festivals, and the languages, from Hindu pilgrimages to Creole sega music. Street food in Port Louis is a highlight.
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Le Morne Brabant, a mountain refuge of escaped enslaved people, and Aapravasi Ghat, where indentured laborers first arrived, tell the island's deeper history.
Things to do, and when to do them
Le Morne Brabant
A dramatic basalt mountain and UNESCO site on the southwest tip, with a guided hike to a viewpoint over the lagoon. Start early to beat the heat.
Black River Gorges National Park
The island's largest protected area, with trails through native forest and views over waterfalls and gorges. Drier winter months are best for hiking.
Chamarel
The Seven Coloured Earths, a patch of multicolored sand dunes, and the Chamarel waterfall, in the island's southwest highlands.
Aapravasi Ghat, Port Louis
The UNESCO-listed immigration depot where hundreds of thousands of indentured laborers arrived in the 19th century. Combine with the capital's central market.
Ile aux Cerfs
A popular island off the east coast with white sand beaches and lagoon activities. Go early on weekdays to avoid the day-boat rush.
Blue Bay Marine Park
Protected coral gardens in the southeast, good for snorkeling and glass-bottom boat trips. Calmest in the summer months.
Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao)
A sacred crater lake and Hindu pilgrimage site in the highlands, the focus of the Maha Shivaratri pilgrimage.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Maha Shivaratri
February or March, following the Hindu lunar calendar
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk to Grand Bassin, many carrying elaborate kanwars. One of the largest Hindu festivals outside India; expect busy roads in the days around it.
Thaipoosam Cavadee
January or February, following the Tamil calendar
Tamil devotees carry decorated cavadees in processions to temples, some with ritual piercings. Striking, and deeply religious; watch respectfully.
Diwali
October or November, following the Hindu lunar calendar
A public holiday in Mauritius. Homes and streets glow with oil lamps and lights, and sweets are shared between neighbors.
Pere Laval pilgrimage
Early September, around the anniversary of his death on September 9
Tens of thousands of pilgrims of many faiths walk overnight to the shrine of Pere Laval in Sainte-Croix, near Port Louis.
Humpback whale season
Roughly July through October
Humpbacks pass the west coast on their annual migration. Boat trips run from the west coast; choose operators that follow the national whale-watching guidelines.
Beat the crowds
- Aim for May or September through November, which combine good weather with fewer visitors than the Christmas and European summer peaks.
- Pick your coast by season: west and north in the windy winter months, east in the calm summer months. The right coast matters more than the right resort.
- Visit Ile aux Cerfs, Chamarel, and Le Morne early in the day, and avoid weekends when many locals head to the same beaches.
- Book the Christmas and New Year weeks far ahead or skip them; they are the most expensive dates of the year.
Open or closed
- During a cyclone warning, the authorities can close beaches, suspend boat trips, and, at the highest warning levels, order people to stay indoors. Resorts are built for this, but plans can be lost for days.
- Public holidays for religious festivals, such as Maha Shivaratri, Thaipoosam Cavadee, Diwali, and Eid, can close government offices and some shops and bring heavy traffic.
- Lagoon conditions vary by coast and season: the east and south can be windy and choppy from roughly June to September, while the west and north stay calmer.
- Hiking in the interior is best in the drier months; trails in Black River Gorges can be slippery and cloud-covered in the rainy season.
With kids in tow
- Reef-protected lagoons make Mauritius one of the best beach destinations for young kids, with calm, shallow water on most resort beaches.
- Many resorts have kids' clubs and family suites; the school-holiday weeks around Christmas and European summer book out first.
- Casela Nature Parks, the giant tortoises at La Vanille, and glass-bottom boat trips are easy wins for younger children.
- For homeschool families, Aapravasi Ghat and Le Morne make powerful history lessons on slavery, indentured labor, and how the island's population came to be.
Getting there
- Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is the only international gateway, with connections via Dubai, Paris, Johannesburg, and other hubs.
- There are no nonstops from the US. From Texas and most US cities, the smoothest routes connect via Dubai or Paris.
- The island is small: most transfers take under an hour and a half, and a rental car or driver lets you explore both coasts in a day.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
