The straight answer

The best time to visit Madagascar is April through November, the dry season, with September through November the sweet spot for baby lemurs and active wildlife, and January through March the months to avoid for cyclones and washed-out roads.

Go between April and November, and if you can choose, aim for September through November. The dry season makes Madagascar's rough roads passable, opens the remote western parks, and brings clear skies to the highlands. By September and October, many lemur species are carrying newborns, reptiles become more active as it warms, and the jacarandas bloom purple in Antananarivo.

April and May are the underrated opening act: the rains have just ended, the forests and rice paddies are at their greenest, and tourist numbers are low. June through August is cooler, with highland nights near 45F (7C) and the island's busiest stretch, driven by European summer holidays. It is also humpback whale season off Ile Sainte-Marie on the east coast, roughly July through September.

December through March is the rainy season, and January through March is also cyclone season in the southwest Indian Ocean. Cyclones most often strike the east and north coasts, rain falls in torrents, and many unpaved roads become impassable. Tsingy de Bemaraha, the country's most famous western park, typically closes for the rains. Madagascar in this window is humid, green, and full of frogs and chameleons, but logistics can collapse, so it is a trip for flexible, experienced travelers only.

Why go to Madagascar

Wildlife found nowhere else

Madagascar split from other landmasses tens of millions of years ago, and the vast majority of its mammals, reptiles, and plants are endemic. Every lemur species on Earth lives only here, along with around half the world's chameleon species.

Landscapes that look invented

The Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava, the razor-sharp limestone forests of Tsingy de Bemaraha, and the sandstone canyons of Isalo feel like different planets on one island.

Rainforest encounters

Hearing the eerie, siren-like call of the indri, the largest living lemur, across the Andasibe rainforest at dawn is one of the great wildlife moments anywhere.

Islands and reefs

Nosy Be in the northwest and Ile Sainte-Marie in the east add beaches, diving, and whale watching to a wildlife trip.

Things to do, and when to do them

01

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

The easiest rainforest park from the capital, home to the indri. Go on a guided morning walk for the calls and a night walk for mouse lemurs and chameleons.

Events and seasons worth planning around

All events
JulyAugustSeptember

Humpback whale season off Ile Sainte-Marie

Roughly July through September

Humpbacks come to the warm channel between Ile Sainte-Marie and the mainland to mate and calve. Boat trips run from the island.

SeptemberOctoberNovember

Lemur baby season

Roughly September through November, varying by species

Many lemur species give birth as the dry season ends, and mothers carry infants on their backs or bellies. A standout time for wildlife photography.

JulyAugustSeptemberOctober

Famadihana (turning of the bones)

Roughly July through October in the highlands

A family ceremony in which ancestral remains are rewrapped in new shrouds, with music and feasting. These are private events; attend only if invited by a family.

June

Independence Day

June 26 every year

Parades, fireworks, and celebrations across the country, particularly in Antananarivo. Expect some closures and busy roads around the holiday.

JanuaryFebruaryMarch

Cyclone season

Roughly January through March

Tropical cyclones strike in some years, most often the east and north coasts. Heavy rain can cut roads and ground flights for days.

Beat the crowds

  • Choose April, May, October, or November over the July and August peak; the best lodges near popular parks are small and fill quickly in summer.
  • Book a reliable driver-guide and domestic flights early. In a country with limited infrastructure, availability, not crowds, is the real constraint.
  • Enter parks at opening time. Wildlife is most active early, and the guided trails are quietest before groups arrive.
  • Consider a single region in depth, such as RN7 in the south or the north around Nosy Be and Ankarana, rather than trying to cover the whole island.

Open or closed

  • Tsingy de Bemaraha typically closes for the rainy season, roughly December to April or May, when access roads become impassable.
  • Many unpaved roads, particularly in the west and north, are impassable in the rainy season; even the main RN7 can see delays after storms.
  • Domestic flights are frequently rescheduled or cancelled. Build buffer days into any itinerary, especially before an international departure.
  • Some small lodges near remote parks close for part of the rainy season. Check before booking between December and March.

With kids in tow

  • Lemurs, chameleons, and giant leaf-tailed geckos make Madagascar a dream for wildlife-mad kids, but the long, bumpy drives are hard on young children. Older kids and teens handle it best.
  • Madagascar is a malaria country. Consult a travel clinic about prophylaxis for all ages, and use repellent and nets.
  • Night walks in Andasibe and Ranomafana are a highlight for kids: guides spot tiny mouse lemurs and sleeping chameleons by flashlight.
  • For homeschool families, it is a living lesson in evolution and island biogeography: why a place isolated for so long ended up with animals found nowhere else.

Getting there

  • Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo is the main gateway, with connections via Paris, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Istanbul, and Johannesburg. Nosy Be also receives some international flights.
  • From the US, the simplest routes connect through Paris or Addis Ababa. From Texas, route via a European hub or via Addis Ababa.
  • Distances are large and roads slow; domestic flights save days between regions, but are prone to schedule changes.
