The best time to visit Borneo
Always hot, always green, and rainy to some degree year-round. The question is when the rain eases and the wildlife lines up.

The straight answer
The best time to visit Malaysian Borneo is March through September, the drier months for orangutan and river wildlife trips in Sabah and Sarawak, climbing Mount Kinabalu, and diving Sipadan.
Go between March and September. Malaysian Borneo is equatorial, so it is hot and humid every month, with highs near 88F (31C) and rain possible any afternoon. But the northeast monsoon from about November through February brings the heaviest, most persistent rain to Sabah's east coast and to Kuching in Sarawak, along with rougher seas and muddier trails. From March the rain eases, and mid year is the most reliable stretch for rainforest lodges, river cruises, and diving.
Wildlife does not follow a strict calendar. Orangutans at Sepilok and in the wild, proboscis monkeys on the Kinabatangan River, and pygmy elephants can be seen year-round, though drier months make river trips easier and some animals gather along riverbanks when water levels drop. Green turtle nesting on Sabah's Turtle Islands peaks from about July to October, and Sipadan diving is at its calmest from roughly April through December.
Mid year is also festival season: Kaamatan, the Sabah harvest festival in May, Gawai Dayak in Sarawak on June 1 and 2, and the Rainforest World Music Festival near Kuching. The trade-off is demand, since lodges on the Kinabatangan and permits for Kinabalu and Sipadan are limited and book out early for July and August.

Why go to Borneo
Orangutans in their home forest
Borneo is one of only two islands where wild orangutans live. Sepilok's rehabilitation center and the forests of the Kinabatangan and Danum Valley give real chances to see them.
Some of the oldest rainforest on Earth
Borneo's lowland dipterocarp forests are among the oldest in the world, rich with hornbills, gibbons, clouded leopards, and pitcher plants.
Mount Kinabalu
At 13,435 ft (4,095m), Malaysia's highest peak is climbable without technical skills in two days, with a dawn summit above the clouds.
World-class diving
Sipadan, off Sabah's southeast coast, is famous for turtles, barracuda tornadoes, and a sheer wall dropping from the beach. Daily permits are limited.
Things to do, and when to do them
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
Feeding times draw the most visitors. The adjacent Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is worth the extra hour.
Kinabatangan River
Dawn and dusk boat cruises for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and sometimes pygmy elephants. Drier months are best.
Mount Kinabalu
Climbs require a permit, a licensed guide, and an overnight at Laban Rata. Permits are limited and book out months ahead for midyear.
Danum Valley
Primary rainforest with some of the best wild orangutan and gibbon viewing in Borneo. Lodges are limited, so book early.
Gunung Mulu National Park
Huge caves, the Pinnacles limestone spires, and a bat exodus at dusk. Reached by small plane from Miri or Kota Kinabalu.
Sipadan and Semporna
World-class diving with daily permit limits. April through December usually brings the best visibility.
Kuching and Bako National Park
Sarawak's relaxed capital, plus proboscis monkeys and bearded pigs on Bako's coastal trails.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Kaamatan (Sabah Harvest Festival)
Throughout May, peaking at the end of the month
Kadazan-Dusun harvest celebrations with rice wine, traditional dress, and the Unduk Ngadau pageant.
Gawai Dayak
June 1 and 2 every year
Sarawak's Dayak harvest festival. Longhouses celebrate with feasts, music, and dancing; some businesses close.
Rainforest World Music Festival
Midyear, usually June or July, varies by year
Held at the Sarawak Cultural Village near Kuching, with global and indigenous musicians. Hotels in Kuching book up.
Turtle nesting season
Peaks roughly July to October
Green and hawksbill turtles nest nightly on the Turtle Islands, where overnight visitor numbers are strictly limited.
Chinese New Year
Late January to mid February, varies by lunar calendar
Kota Kinabalu and Kuching have large Chinese communities. Some shops close and regional travel spikes.
Beat the crowds
- Travel in April, May, or September instead of July and August. The weather is similar and lodges and permits are easier to secure.
- Book Kinabalu permits and Kinabatangan and Danum Valley lodges early; they are the real bottleneck, not crowds on the trail.
- At Sepilok, arrive for the morning opening rather than feeding time to avoid the tour bus rush.
- For Sipadan, pick a dive operator with guaranteed permit days; other days you dive nearby Mabul and Kapalai, which are excellent in their own right.
Open or closed
- Mount Kinabalu climbs require a permit, a licensed guide, and accommodation at Laban Rata; trails can close temporarily after heavy rain or rockfall.
- Sipadan access is limited to a fixed number of divers per day, allocated through licensed dive operators.
- Turtle Islands Park allows only a small number of overnight visitors, so the few spaces sell out early in nesting season.
- During the heaviest monsoon rains (December to February), river levels rise, some jungle trails close, and boat trips can be cancelled.
- Gawai Dayak (June 1 and 2) and Hari Raya close some businesses and fill domestic transport in Sarawak and Sabah.
With kids in tow
- Sepilok, the sun bear center, and a Kinabatangan river cruise make a very kid-friendly three to four day wildlife loop.
- Kinabalu has a minimum age requirement for the summit climb; check with Sabah Parks before planning it with children.
- Leeches are common in the rainforest. Leech socks and a positive attitude go a long way with kids.
- For homeschool families, Borneo is a living biology lesson in rainforest ecology and conservation, especially on the palm oil and orangutan story.
Getting there
- The main gateways are Kota Kinabalu (BKI) in Sabah and Kuching (KCH) in Sarawak. There are no nonstop flights from the US.
- Most Americans connect through Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, or Tokyo; from Texas, a route via a Pacific or Gulf hub is typical.
- Domestic flights link Kota Kinabalu with Sandakan (for Sepilok and the Kinabatangan), Tawau (for Semporna and Sipadan), and Miri (for Mulu).
- Sabah and Sarawak run their own immigration checks, so bring your passport even when flying in from Peninsular Malaysia.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
