The straight answer
The best time to visit the Seychelles is April to May or October to November, the calm transition months between the monsoons, when the sea is flat and clear, winds are light, and diving and snorkeling are at their best.
Go in April and May or October and November. These are the transition months between the two trade-wind seasons, and they deliver the Seychelles' best conditions: light winds, calm, glassy seas, underwater visibility at its peak, and warm, sunny days in the mid 80s F (about 29C to 30C). October and November also bring whale shark season around Mahe.
The rest of the year is still warm, because the islands sit only about four to five degrees south of the equator. From roughly May to September, the southeast trade winds blow steadily: it is the driest, least humid time, with highs near 81F (27C), but seas are choppier, some southeast-facing beaches collect seaweed, and boat crossings can be rough. December through March brings the northwest monsoon: hotter, more humid, and the rainiest months, with January typically the wettest, though rain often comes in short, heavy bursts.
One thing the Seychelles largely avoids is cyclones. The main granitic islands lie north of the usual cyclone tracks in the southwest Indian Ocean, so unlike Mauritius or Madagascar, direct hits are very rare. That makes the Seychelles one of the safest Indian Ocean bets in January through March, if you can accept more rain and humidity.

Why go to Seychelles
Granite-framed beaches
Giant sculpted granite boulders on white sand, like Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue and Anse Lazio on Praslin, make the Seychelles' beaches unlike any others in the tropics.
Unique wildlife
Aldabra giant tortoises, rare endemic birds like the Seychelles black parrot, and the coco de mer palm, with the largest seed in the plant kingdom, live here and almost nowhere else.
Island hopping made simple
Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue are linked by frequent ferries and short flights, so you can combine a lively main island, a forested island, and a car-light bicycle island in one trip.
Out of the cyclone belt
The main islands sit close to the equator and are very rarely hit by cyclones, making the Seychelles one of the steadiest year-round Indian Ocean destinations.
Things to do, and when to do them
Vallee de Mai, Praslin
A UNESCO-listed palm forest and one of only two places where the coco de mer grows wild. Listen for the black parrot; go early for the quietest trails.
Anse Source d'Argent, La Digue
The famous granite-boulder beach, reached through the L'Union Estate, which charges an entrance fee. Visit at low tide for the best shallows and photos.
Anse Lazio, Praslin
Often rated one of the world's best beaches. Calmest in the transition months and in the southeast trade season, when it is sheltered.
Morne Seychellois National Park, Mahe
Mountain trails through mist forest to viewpoints like Copolia and the Trois Freres. Best in the drier months, early in the day.
Curieuse Island
Free-roaming Aldabra giant tortoises, a mangrove boardwalk, and coco de mer palms, often combined with snorkeling at nearby St Pierre islet.
Cousin Island Special Reserve
A seabird sanctuary and hawksbill turtle nesting site managed by Nature Seychelles, visited on guided tours from Praslin.
Sainte Anne Marine National Park
Coral reefs and seagrass beds just off Mahe, with glass-bottom boat and snorkeling trips from Victoria.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Whale shark season
Roughly October and November, sometimes stretching from August to December
Whale sharks feed in the plankton-rich waters around Mahe as the trade winds ease. Sightings vary year to year.
Hawksbill turtle nesting
Roughly October through February, peaking late in the year
Hawksbills nest in daylight on protected beaches like Cousin Island, a rare chance to see nesting without night patrols.
Sooty tern colony on Bird Island
Roughly May through October
Hundreds of thousands of sooty terns nest on Bird Island in the breeding season, one of the Indian Ocean's great seabird spectacles.
Festival Kreol
Late October, around Creole Day on October 28
A celebration of Seychellois Creole culture, with music, dance, food, and fashion across the islands.
Beat the crowds
- Visit in the transition months, but avoid the Easter and Christmas weeks, when rates peak and flights fill.
- Arrive at Anse Source d'Argent and Anse Lazio early in the morning, before day trippers arrive on the ferries from Mahe and Praslin.
- Base yourself on La Digue for a night or two rather than day-tripping; the island is peaceful once the last ferry leaves.
- Choose smaller guesthouses on Praslin and La Digue for quieter stays and local Creole food at a fraction of resort prices.
Open or closed
- Inter-island boat crossings can be rough or cancelled in strong southeast winds, roughly June to September. Build in some flexibility.
- Seaweed builds up on some southeast-facing beaches during the southeast trade winds; the resort beach you book matters by season.
- Some seabird islands limit or pause visits during sensitive nesting periods; check with the island operator before planning a trip.
- All visitors must apply for the Seychelles Travel Authorisation online before departure.
With kids in tow
- Calm transition-season seas and shallow beaches make the Seychelles great for kids, especially in April, May, October, and November.
- Giant tortoises on Curieuse and La Digue, glass-bottom boats, and cycling on car-light La Digue are easy family wins.
- Some beaches have strong currents or waves in certain seasons; ask locally and swim only where it is safe for children.
- For homeschool families, the Seychelles are a lesson in evolution and conservation: ancient granite islands, the coco de mer, and species rescued from the brink of extinction.
Getting there
- Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahe connects via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa, and Istanbul.
- There are no nonstops from the US. From Texas, Emirates and Qatar Airways connections through Dubai or Doha are the most direct routings.
- From Mahe, fast ferries reach Praslin in about an hour and La Digue in about 15 more minutes; short domestic flights also serve Praslin.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.

Seychelles timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit the Seychelles?
October or April. Both fall in the calm transition season, with light winds, flat seas, and the best underwater visibility. November and May are nearly as good.
Does the Seychelles get cyclones?
Very rarely. The main islands sit close to the equator, north of the usual cyclone tracks in the southwest Indian Ocean. The remote southern outer islands are more exposed but still seldom hit.
What is the rainy season in the Seychelles?
Roughly December through March, during the northwest monsoon, with January usually the wettest month. Rain tends to come in short, heavy showers rather than all-day downpours.
What is the cheapest time to visit the Seychelles?
February, March, June, and September often have the best rates. Avoid the Christmas, New Year, and Easter weeks, which are the most expensive.
Is the Seychelles windy in July?
Yes. The southeast trade winds blow steadily from about June to September, making seas choppier and some beaches seaweed-prone. Stay on sheltered northwest-facing beaches for the calmest water.
When can you see whale sharks in the Seychelles?
Roughly October and November, sometimes from August to December, when they feed in the plankton-rich waters around Mahe.
