The Fiesta exists here for a reason: the Albuquerque Box, a local October wind pattern in which surface winds and winds aloft blow in opposite directions, letting pilots ride south low, climb, drift back north, and land near where they started. October mornings also bring cold, stable, dense air that balloons love, which is why the event has been an October fixture since the 1970s.
The one non-negotiable of Fiesta planning is the alarm clock. The great events happen at and before sunrise, with balloons inflating in the dark by around 6am; by mid-morning the flying is done. Special Shape days bring the crowd-favorite balloons: dinosaurs, cows, cartoon characters, some as tall as a ten-story building.
Evenings add the balloon glows: on select nights, hundreds of tethered balloons inflate on the field at dusk and fire their burners in choreographed all-burns, glowing like giant lightbulbs, followed by fireworks. Glows are calmer, warmer, and arguably even better with small kids than the dawn sessions.
What makes the Fiesta unique among big spectator events is access: spectators walk the launch field itself, among the crews, close enough to help hold an envelope open (crews sometimes invite it) and to feel the burner heat. There are no barricades between you and the balloons.
