The straight answer
The best time to visit Texas is October through November or March through April; July and August are genuinely avoid-tier for anything outdoors, with 100F (38C) heat across most of the state.
Texas has two golden windows, and the whole trip depends on hitting one. March and April bring bluebonnets to the Hill Country, 75F (24C) perfection to patios statewide, spring break beach season to the coast, and the twin cultural juggernauts of SXSW in Austin and rodeo season in Houston. October and November are the mirror: the heat finally breaks, the State Fair of Texas fries everything imaginable in Dallas, Austin City Limits fills Zilker Park across two weekends, and Big Bend's desert reopens for comfortable hiking.
Now the honesty the brochures skip: July and August are brutal. Most of the state sits at 95 to 105F (35 to 41C) for weeks on end, pavement radiates past sunset, and outdoor sightseeing between 11am and 7pm is a bad idea from Dallas to San Antonio. Summer works only if the trip is built around water, the coast, the rivers, or a pool, or around air conditioning. Winters are mild and often lovely, with the caveat that the occasional Arctic blast can drop the whole state below freezing for a few days. Time it right and Texas is enormous fun; time it wrong and you will mostly remember the heat.

Spring
The headline window. March and April run 70s and low 80s F (21 to 28C) with bluebonnets along every Hill Country roadside, festival season in full swing, and Big Bend at its busiest for good reason. Storms and the odd hail-thumper are the tradeoff, and South Padre runs loud through spring break.
Summer
Avoid-tier for outdoor travel, and we mean it: 100F (38C) days stack up from June into September across most of the state. The exceptions prove the rule: Gulf beaches, spring-fed swimming holes, tubing the Comal and Guadalupe, and museum-hopping in air conditioning. Nobody hikes Big Bend in August and enjoys it.
Fall
The other golden window. The heat releases its grip in October, patios refill, the State Fair and ACL Fest anchor the calendar, and November is arguably the single best month for Big Bend and Hill Country road trips. Book festival-weekend hotels in Austin and Dallas early.
Winter
Mild and underrated. December through February typically runs 50 to 70F (10 to 21C) across the southern half, ideal for San Antonio's holiday-lit River Walk, border-city food trips, and snowbird season on the coast. Brief hard freezes happen; pack one warm layer and carry on.

- Summer trips with kids must be water-planned: hotel pool, Comal River tubing, Gulf beaches, or Barton Springs, with outdoor sightseeing compressed into mornings. The heat is not a joke with car seats.
- Big Bend with kids is a fall-through-spring trip only, and distances are serious: the nearest big airports are hours away, so build the drive into the adventure and gas up at every chance.
