The state's range is easy to underestimate. Within a few hours you can span Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg's revolutionary triangle, Civil War fields from Manassas to Appomattox, the Blue Ridge's hollows and ridgelines, and Virginia Beach's three-mile boardwalk. Summers are hot and sticky, 88F (31C) and up east of the mountains, best spent at the beach or up at elevation. Winters are mild by northern standards and quietly rewarding: Williamsburg dresses for the holidays, and the parks empty out for anyone with a warm coat.

Fall
The signature stretch. September is warm, dry, and uncrowded; October brings apple stands, wine harvest, and Shenandoah's color show, peaking mid to late month. Skyline Drive weekends jam at the entrance stations, so go midweek or at first light.
Winter
Mild, cheap, and atmospheric in the right places. Williamsburg's Grand Illumination and candlelit evenings make December the sleeper month; battlefields and Monticello reward crowd-free cold days. The mountains go quiet and occasionally icy; the coast hibernates.
