The straight answer
The best time to visit Victoria Falls is June through August, when the falls still run strong, the spray has thinned enough to actually see them, and dry, mild weather lines up with prime safari in nearby Chobe; come roughly mid August to December instead for Devil's Pool and the best white-water rafting.
Go June through August for the best balance. The Zambezi's flood peaks roughly March through May, when an estimated 500 million liters of water per minute can thunder over the edge and throw a column of spray so thick it hides the falls themselves: you get drenched on the viewing paths and see a white wall. By June and July the flow is still powerful, the spray has eased enough for real views, the rainforest paths are green, and the weather is dry, sunny, and pleasant, with highs near 77F (25C) and cool nights.
From roughly September through December the river drops. The Zimbabwe side, which faces the main falls, keeps water year-round, but the Zambian side can thin to bare rock by October and November. This is the season for the adventure list: Devil's Pool on the lip of the falls typically opens roughly mid August and runs into January, depending on water levels, and the Zambezi's low-water rafting season, usually around August to December, runs the full gorge with its biggest rapids. The trade is heat: October highs can reach 93F (34C) or more.
The rains arrive around November or December and run to March. The river rises again, the rainforest turns lush, and prices drop, but humidity and afternoon storms return. Victoria Falls is a year-round destination; the question is which version of the falls you want to see.

Why go to Victoria Falls
One of the world's great waterfalls
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders, is roughly a mile wide and about 355 feet (108 m) high, forming the largest single curtain of falling water on Earth. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Two countries, two perspectives
The Zimbabwe side offers the long frontal view of the main falls through a rainforest walk; the Zambian side gets you close to the edge, with the Knife-Edge Bridge and, in low water, Devil's Pool.
Africa's adventure capital
Zambezi rafting through some of the world's most famous commercial rapids, a bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge, gorge swings, helicopter flights, and sunset river cruises all sit within a few miles of town.
Safari on the doorstep
Chobe National Park in Botswana, with some of Africa's largest elephant concentrations in the dry season, is about 90 minutes away. Hwange in Zimbabwe and the Okavango Delta are easy extensions.
Things to do, and when to do them
The Zimbabwe-side rainforest walk
Some 16 viewpoints along the gorge facing the main falls. Go early for soft light and fewer groups; at peak flow, a rain jacket or rented poncho is not optional.
Devil's Pool on Livingstone Island
A natural rock pool on the edge of the falls, reached by guided tour from the Zambian side. Usually open roughly mid August to January, depending on water levels; book ahead, as numbers are limited.
Zambezi white-water rafting
Best in low water, roughly August to December, when the full run through the Batoka Gorge is open. At high water, rafting is usually suspended or limited to shorter sections.
Flight of Angels
A helicopter or microlight flight over the falls. The single best way to see them at peak flow, when spray hides the view from the ground.
Sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi
Hippos, elephants on the banks, and a sundowner above the falls. A relaxed evening that works in any season.
Chobe National Park day trip
Cross into Botswana for a morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise among elephants and hippos. Best from roughly June to October when the herds come to the river.
The Victoria Falls Bridge
The 1905 bridge over the gorge links the two countries, with a bungee jump, bridge tour, and views straight into the Boiling Pot.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Peak flow on the Zambezi
Roughly March through May, varying with the season's rains
The maximum volume of water and spray. Awe-inspiring noise and power, but spray often hides the falls and soaks visitors on the paths.
Lunar rainbow nights
Around the full moon, roughly April through August
When the spray is heavy and the moon is full, a moonbow can form over the falls. The Zimbabwe-side rainforest opens for special evening visits on full-moon nights.
Devil's Pool season
Roughly mid August into January, depending on water levels
The famous edge-of-the-falls swim is only possible when the river is low enough. Opening and closing dates move each year with the flow.
Low-water rafting season
Roughly August through December
The full Zambezi gorge run opens, with big-volume rapids that rank among the world's best commercial white water.
Beat the crowds
- Enter the Zimbabwe-side park at opening time; tour groups arrive midmorning, and early light on the falls is the best of the day.
- Book Devil's Pool, rafting, and helicopter flights before you arrive in July and August; places are limited and the most popular time slots sell out.
- Stay in Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia) based on what you want most: Zimbabwe for the main views, Zambia for Devil's Pool and the lip of the falls. Crossing the border for a day is easy.
- Consider June or late May: strong flow, dry weather, and fewer visitors than the July peak.
Open or closed
- Devil's Pool is closed when the river is high, typically from around January to mid August. Angel's Pool, a nearby alternative, sometimes operates in shoulder water levels.
- Rafting is suspended or shortened at high water, roughly March through June or July, depending on the year.
- In the low-water months of October and November, much of the Zambian side can be dry rock. The Zimbabwe side, facing the main falls, keeps flowing year-round.
- Border crossings between Zimbabwe and Zambia run daily with set operating hours. Check current visa rules for both countries; a combined KAZA visa has been available for some nationalities.
With kids in tow
- The Zimbabwe-side rainforest walk is easy, mostly flat, and fine for kids of all ages; at peak flow, pack dry clothes for after.
- Most adventure activities set minimum ages: Devil's Pool, rafting, and bungee typically require teenagers or adults. Sunset cruises and helicopter flights work for all ages.
- Victoria Falls is in a malaria area; the risk is highest in the rainy season. Consult a travel clinic about prophylaxis for the whole family.
- Geography and geology lessons come alive here: the zig-zag gorges below the falls are the old positions of the falls, carved as the river cut back through basalt fault lines over thousands of years.
Getting there
- Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe and Livingstone Airport (LVI) in Zambia are both served from Johannesburg. Kasane (BBK) in Botswana is about an hour and a half away by road.
- From the US, connect through Johannesburg; nonstops to Johannesburg run from Atlanta and New York area airports. From Texas, route via Atlanta, New York, or a European or Middle Eastern hub.
- The two towns are about 6 miles (10 km) apart across the Victoria Falls Bridge, so it is easy to see both sides of the falls in one trip.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
Victoria Falls timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit Victoria Falls?
July. The falls are still full, the spray has dropped enough for clear views, the weather is dry and mild, and nearby Chobe is in prime dry-season form. June and August are close seconds.
When is Victoria Falls at its fullest?
Peak flow is roughly March through May, after the rainy season upstream. The volume is staggering, but the spray is so thick that the falls can be hard to see from the ground; a helicopter flight is the best way to take it in.
When is Devil's Pool open?
Typically from around mid August to January, when the Zambezi is low enough to swim safely at the edge. Exact dates shift every year with water levels, and tours must be booked through the operator on Livingstone Island.
Does Victoria Falls dry up?
Not completely. In the low-water months of October and November, parts of the Zambian side can dry to bare rock, but the main falls on the Zimbabwe side keep flowing year-round.
What is the cheapest time to visit Victoria Falls?
The rainy season, roughly January through March, and the hot low-water months of October and November. Lodge rates drop, and each season has its own draw: rising water or adventure activities.
Which side of Victoria Falls is better, Zimbabwe or Zambia?
Zimbabwe has the better overall views, with about three quarters of the falls visible from its side and water year-round. Zambia gets you closer, and in low water offers Devil's Pool. If you can, see both.
