What March is like in Victoria Falls

March is warm, with highs near 84F (29C), and the rains are easing. The flow is nearing its annual peak, so the falls are thunderous and dramatic. The catch is the spray: it rises in a huge column and falls like rain on the viewing paths, soaking you and often hiding much of the falls. Crowds are still fairly light and prices are moderate.

March suits travelers who want to feel the full power of the Zambezi and do not mind a drenching. Rafting is usually suspended or cut short, and Devil's Pool is closed. If clear photos of the falls matter to you, plan for June to August. If you come now, book a helicopter flight for the best view.

Make the most of March

What is especially good about Victoria Falls this month.

01

Peak flow season begins

The Zambezi is running close to its maximum. The roar and spray can be felt long before you reach the edge.

02

Flight of Angels

A helicopter or microlight flight shows the falls from above, which is the best way to see them when spray hides the view from the ground.

03

A full-body soaking

Walking the rainforest paths at high water is an experience in itself. Kids tend to love it.

What to pack for March

  • A proper rain jacket or rented poncho
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Quick-dry clothes and a full change for afterward
  • Sandals with a good grip for wet paths

Our timing tip

Book your helicopter flight for the morning, when the air is usually clearer and the spray column is easier to see against the sky.

Beat the crowds

  • Enter the Zimbabwe-side park at opening time; tour groups arrive midmorning, and early light on the falls is the best of the day.
  • Book Devil's Pool, rafting, and helicopter flights before you arrive in July and August; places are limited and the most popular time slots sell out.
  • Stay in Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia) based on what you want most: Zimbabwe for the main views, Zambia for Devil's Pool and the lip of the falls. Crossing the border for a day is easy.
  • Consider June or late May: strong flow, dry weather, and fewer visitors than the July peak.

Know before you go

  • Devil's Pool is closed when the river is high, typically from around January to mid August. Angel's Pool, a nearby alternative, sometimes operates in shoulder water levels.
  • Rafting is suspended or shortened at high water, roughly March through June or July, depending on the year.
  • In the low-water months of October and November, much of the Zambian side can be dry rock. The Zimbabwe side, facing the main falls, keeps flowing year-round.
  • Border crossings between Zimbabwe and Zambia run daily with set operating hours. Check current visa rules for both countries; a combined KAZA visa has been available for some nationalities.
