The straight answer
The best time to visit Nepal is October through November, with March through April as the strong second choice: clear Himalayan views, stable trekking weather, and festivals in the fall.
Go in October or November. The monsoon has washed the air clean, the peaks stand out sharp against blue sky nearly every morning, and Kathmandu is busy with Dashain and Tihar, the country's biggest festivals. March and April are the other window: warmer, the rhododendron forests bloom red and pink in the middle hills, and Everest expedition season fills Base Camp, though afternoon haze softens the views.
Timing matters more here than almost anywhere, because the monsoon from June through September does not just bring rain. It brings cloud that can hide the mountains for days, leeches on forest trails, landslides that close roads, and weather delays on the small-plane flights into Lukla and other mountain airstrips. The trekking regions go quiet for good reason.
Winter is the underrated option. December through February is cold at altitude and some high passes can be closed by snow, but skies are often the clearest of the year, lower treks such as Poon Hill are uncrowded, and Kathmandu and Chitwan are mild and pleasant. The month-by-month reality below covers both the mountains and the valleys.

Why go to Nepal
Eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks
Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Kangchenjunga, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna I all stand fully or partly in Nepal. No other country puts you this close to that much altitude.
Teahouse trekking
On the Everest and Annapurna trails you sleep and eat in family-run lodges, so a multi-week trek needs no tent and no camping gear. It is some of the most accessible high-mountain walking anywhere.
A living medieval valley
Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur each have a UNESCO-listed Durbar Square of pagoda temples and palace courtyards, still in daily use for worship, markets, and festivals.
Rhinos and tigers in the lowlands
Chitwan National Park in the southern Terai is one of the best places in Asia to see greater one-horned rhinos from a jeep or canoe, a completely different Nepal from the mountains.
Things to do, and when to do them
Everest Base Camp trek
Usually 12 to 14 days round trip from Lukla. October, November, April, and May are the windows; build in spare days for flight delays.
Annapurna region treks
Poon Hill is a short, family-friendly option with a famous sunrise view; the full Annapurna Circuit crosses Thorong La, which can close in heavy snow.
Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares
Three royal cities within an hour of each other. Bhaktapur is the best preserved; go early before the day-tour groups.
Boudhanath and Swayambhunath
Boudhanath's great stupa is the center of Tibetan Buddhist life in the valley; walk the clockwise kora at dusk with the pilgrims.
Chitwan National Park
Best from October through March; February to April, after the tall grass is cut, gives the best wildlife visibility, though heat builds by April.
Pokhara and Phewa Lake
The relaxed lakeside base for the Annapurnas, with paragliding off Sarangkot in the dry season.
Lumbini
The birthplace of the Buddha, with monasteries built by Buddhist nations from around the world. Winter mornings are foggy but comfortable.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Dashain
Late September into October, set by the lunar calendar
Nepal's biggest festival, about two weeks long. Families travel home, so buses and domestic flights are packed and some offices close for days.
Tihar
October or November, around the new moon, varies by year
Nepal's festival of lights, which coincides with Diwali: oil lamps, marigold garlands, and a day that honors dogs.
Holi (Fagu Purnima)
March, on the full moon, varies by year
Colored powder and water fights across Kathmandu, especially around Basantapur and Thamel. Wear clothes you will throw away.
Indra Jatra
Late August or September, set by the lunar calendar
Masked dances and the chariot procession of the Kumari, the living goddess, through Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Losar
February or early March, varies by year
Tibetan and Sherpa new year, celebrated at Boudhanath and in Sherpa communities with butter lamps and monastery dances.
Mani Rimdu
October or November at Tengboche Monastery, varies by lunar calendar
Masked Sherpa monastery dances on the Everest trail. Worth timing a trek around if the dates line up.
Buddha Jayanti
April or May, on the full moon, varies by year
The Buddha's birthday, marked with processions at Lumbini, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath.
Beat the crowds
- Trek in November rather than October: the weather is just as clear, the trails thin out after the Dashain holiday rush, and lodges are easier to book.
- On the Everest trail, start early each morning. Most groups leave after breakfast; walking by 7am gets you quiet trails and the clearest views before afternoon cloud.
- Consider Langtang, Manaslu, or the Mardi Himal route instead of the two headline treks; they are less crowded in the same seasons.
- December and February are excellent for lower treks like Poon Hill and Ghorepani with a fraction of the October traffic.
Open or closed
- Monsoon (June to September): many teahouses on the main trekking routes reduce service or close, and road landslides can cut off trailheads for days.
- High passes, especially Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit, can close after heavy snowfall from December through February. Check conditions before committing.
- During Dashain, many shops and offices in Kathmandu close for several days and transport is overwhelmed as people head home. Book buses and flights early.
- Mountain flights to Lukla are weather dependent all year. In peak seasons, many Lukla flights have recently departed from Ramechhap, a long drive from Kathmandu, rather than Kathmandu itself. Budget two buffer days.
- Nepal now requires most foreign trekkers in national parks and conservation areas to hire a licensed guide. Confirm the current rule for your route before you go.
With kids in tow
- Poon Hill and short Annapurna foothill treks work well for kids who hike: modest altitude, daily lodges, and big views from the first morning.
- Altitude is the real limit with children. Most families keep kids below about 13,000 ft (4,000m) and skip Everest Base Camp.
- Chitwan is a hit with children: canoe rides past crocodiles, rhino sightings, and the elephant breeding center.
- For homeschool families, the Kathmandu Valley is a living lesson in Hindu and Buddhist traditions side by side, and fall festivals make that lesson vivid.
Getting there
- Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu is the main gateway. There are no nonstops from the US; most travelers connect through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, or Delhi.
- From Texas, one-stop routings through the Gulf hubs from Dallas or Houston are usually the fastest option.
- Domestic flights connect Kathmandu with Pokhara, Lukla, and Bharatpur (for Chitwan). Tourist buses cover the same routes more cheaply but slowly.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
Nepal timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit Nepal?
October or November. The monsoon has cleared the air, the mountain views are at their sharpest, and trails are dry. November is slightly quieter than October with the same weather.
What is the cheapest time to visit Nepal?
June through August, during the monsoon, when flights and lodges drop their prices. The catch is real: rain, cloud-hidden mountains, leeches, and flight delays. For value without the monsoon, try December through February.
When is monsoon season in Nepal?
Roughly June through mid September, with the heaviest rain in July and August. Treks in rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang are the main exception.
Can you trek to Everest Base Camp in winter?
Yes, with good gear. December through February brings clear skies and few people, but nights at Gorak Shep drop well below freezing and some lodges higher up close. It suits experienced cold-weather trekkers.
Is spring or fall better for trekking in Nepal?
Fall gives clearer views and more stable weather. Spring is warmer, with blooming rhododendrons and Everest expedition season, but more afternoon haze. Both are excellent.
When is Nepal most crowded?
October, followed by April. Everest and Annapurna lodges fill up and Lukla flights book out, so reserve early for those months.
