The straight answer

The best time to visit Delhi and Agra is October through March, with late October to November and February to March the sweet spots: warm days, cool nights, and clearer air than midwinter.

Go between October and March, and aim for its edges. Late October and November bring warm, dry days and Diwali; February and March bring spring sunshine, the Taj Mahotsav in Agra, and Holi, which is celebrated with special intensity in nearby Mathura and Vrindavan. In all of these months, days sit in the 70s and 80s F (20s C), perfect for walking Old Delhi or watching sunrise at the Taj Mahal.

The middle of winter has two catches that guidebooks often skip. Delhi's air quality is typically at its worst from about late October through January, when crop burning, fireworks, and cold still air combine. And December and January bring dense fog that can delay trains and flights for hours, even if it gives the Taj a soft, misty sunrise. Check air quality forecasts and build buffer time into any tight connections.

From April through June, the plains turn punishingly hot, with highs regularly passing 104F (40C) and sometimes 113F (45C). The monsoon from July to September cools things slightly, turns the gardens green, and puts reflections in the Taj's pools, but brings heavy humidity and flooding. Month by month, here is the full picture.

Why go to Delhi and Agra

The Taj Mahal

The most famous building in India, and it earns every bit of the hype when seen at sunrise from the gardens or at sunset from Mehtab Bagh across the river.

Mughal grandeur in three cities

Delhi's Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb, Agra Fort, and the abandoned capital of Fatehpur Sikri tell the story of the Mughal empire in stone.

Old Delhi's street food

Parathas in Paranthe Wali Gali, kebabs near Jama Masjid, and jalebis in Chandni Chowk. A morning food walk is a highlight of any trip.

Gateway to India

Delhi is the start of the Golden Triangle with Agra and Jaipur, and a short flight or train from Rajasthan, Varanasi, and the Himalaya.

October or November, varies by year

Lights, sweets, and fireworks across both cities. Expect busy markets and a sharp dip in air quality afterward.

Beat the crowds

  • Be at the Taj Mahal's east gate before sunrise. The first hour after opening is the calmest of the day, and the light is at its best.
  • Never plan the Taj for a Friday (closed) or the Red Fort and Akshardham for a Monday (closed).
  • February and March give peak-season weather with slightly thinner crowds and prices than December and January.
  • In Delhi, visit Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar at opening time, and save Old Delhi's markets for late afternoon when the food stalls are busiest.

Open or closed

  • The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for prayers at its mosque. Night viewing is offered on a few nights around the full moon, except Fridays and during Ramadan; tickets are limited.
  • The Red Fort and Akshardham close on Mondays. National Museum hours also vary, so check before you go.
  • Winter fog, usually December to January, frequently delays trains and flights by hours. Build buffer time into any tight onward connection.
  • Around Republic Day, security closures affect central Delhi for several days, including rehearsals in the weeks before.
  • Delhi air quality often reaches hazardous levels between late October and January. Check the forecast and consider masks, especially for children and anyone with asthma.

With kids in tow

  • The Taj Mahal is free for children under 15, and the sunrise visit is magic for kids if you can get them up early.
  • Heat is the main hazard. From April to June, keep kids indoors in the middle of the day and carry plenty of water.
  • Delhi's winter air quality can be hard on children's lungs. February and March are the most comfortable months for families.
  • For homeschool families, the Mughal monuments, from Humayun's Tomb to the Taj, make a clear timeline of the dynasty's architecture.

Getting there

  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi is the gateway. Air India has flown nonstop from several US hubs, but routes have shifted with airspace closures, so check current schedules; other carriers connect via Europe and the Gulf.
  • From Texas, one-stop routings through the Gulf, Europe, or a US East Coast hub are most common.
  • Agra is about 2 hours from Delhi by the fastest express trains, or 3 to 4 hours by car on the Yamuna Expressway.
  • US citizens need a visa; India's e-Visa is available for tourist trips. Check current requirements before booking.

Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
