What January is like in Nepal

January in Nepal is clear and crisp. Kathmandu reaches highs near 64F (18C) on sunny days, but nights are frosty and it is very cold at altitude. The mountain views are sharp and the lower trails are nearly empty. High passes like Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit can be snowbound, and Chitwan mornings start foggy before turning pleasant. Prices are at their lowest.

It suits lower and mid-altitude trekkers like the Poon Hill route, culture lovers in the Kathmandu Valley and budget travelers. It is not the time for high passes unless you are experienced and flexible. For the classic big treks, aim for October, November or April.

Make the most of January

What is especially good about Nepal this month.

01

Crystal mountain views

Dry winter air gives some of the clearest Himalayan views of the year, especially at sunrise from Poon Hill.

02

Empty Durbar Squares

Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are calm, and the low sun lights up the old temples beautifully.

03

Chitwan in winter

After the morning fog lifts, days in Chitwan National Park are pleasant for canoe rides and jungle walks.

What to pack for January

  • A warm down jacket
  • Thermal base layers for freezing nights
  • A warm sleeping bag liner for teahouses
  • Sunglasses and strong sunscreen for high-altitude sun

Our timing tip

Check snow conditions on Thorong La before committing to the Annapurna Circuit, since heavy snow can close the pass.

Beat the crowds

  • Trek in November rather than October: the weather is just as clear, the trails thin out after the Dashain holiday rush, and lodges are easier to book.
  • On the Everest trail, start early each morning. Most groups leave after breakfast; walking by 7am gets you quiet trails and the clearest views before afternoon cloud.
  • Consider Langtang, Manaslu, or the Mardi Himal route instead of the two headline treks; they are less crowded in the same seasons.
  • December and February are excellent for lower treks like Poon Hill and Ghorepani with a fraction of the October traffic.

Know before you go

  • Monsoon (June to September): many teahouses on the main trekking routes reduce service or close, and road landslides can cut off trailheads for days.
  • High passes, especially Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit, can close after heavy snowfall from December through February. Check conditions before committing.
  • During Dashain, many shops and offices in Kathmandu close for several days and transport is overwhelmed as people head home. Book buses and flights early.
  • Mountain flights to Lukla are weather dependent all year. In peak seasons, many Lukla flights have recently departed from Ramechhap, a long drive from Kathmandu, rather than Kathmandu itself. Budget two buffer days.
