The best time to visit Krakow

Poland's royal city is cheap and walkable year-round, but summer brings crowds and winter brings smoggy cold, so the shoulders win.

The straight answer

The best time to visit Krakow is May through June or September through early October: mild weather for the Old Town and Kazimierz, manageable queues at Auschwitz-Birkenau and the salt mine, and prices below the summer peak.

Go in May, June, or September into early October. The Main Market Square fills with cafe tables, the Planty park that rings the Old Town is green, and day trips to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and the Tatra Mountains are comfortable without summer's heat and crowds.

July and August are warm and busy, with highs in the upper 70s F (about 25C), thunderstorms, and heat waves in some years. Crowds peak at Wawel, Auschwitz-Birkenau, and the salt mine, and the Old Town is lively late into the night, including with bachelor parties. It is fine if you book ahead, but less pleasant.

Winter is cold, gray, and short on daylight, and air quality can suffer on still days during the heating season, though it has improved significantly since the city banned coal and wood burning in 2019. The Christmas market on the Main Square and the nativity crib (szopka) tradition make December worthwhile, and January and February are the cheapest and quietest time to visit.

Why go to Krakow

A royal city that survived

Krakow was Poland's capital for centuries and came through World War II largely intact. The Old Town and Wawel Hill form one of the first UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Kazimierz

The historic Jewish quarter, with synagogues, cemeteries, and a lively cafe and bar scene, is both a place of memory and one of the best neighborhoods in the city.

Essential history

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, about 90 minutes away, and Schindler's Factory museum in the city make Krakow the base for understanding the Holocaust in Poland.

Excellent value

Food, drink, hotels, and museums cost far less than in Western European cities, and pierogi and zapiekanka are cheap, filling, and everywhere.

Beat the crowds

  • Book Auschwitz-Birkenau entry and Wieliczka tickets online as soon as your dates are set in summer. Walk-ups are often turned away.
  • Visit the Main Square and St. Mary's early in the morning before tour groups arrive.
  • Stay in Kazimierz or Podgorze for a quieter base with better food than the Old Town tourist strip.
  • Avoid Friday and Saturday nights in the Old Town in summer if you want calm; the bar crowds peak then.

Open or closed

  • The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial closes on January 1, December 25, and Easter Sunday.
  • Poland restricts Sunday trading, so most shops close on most Sundays. Restaurants and museums stay open.
  • Some museums, including branches of the city history museum, have free or reduced hours on specific weekdays and close on others. Check each museum's schedule.
  • Major holidays like Easter, All Saints' Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day close many shops and some sights.
  • Winter air quality is the one seasonal health note: on still, cold days check the local air quality index before long outdoor walks.

With kids in tow

  • The Wawel dragon statue by the river breathes fire every few minutes, and the Dragon's Den cave below Wawel Hill is a short, fun visit.
  • The Wieliczka Salt Mine has child-friendly routes; the main tour involves many steps, so check age suitability.
  • Auschwitz-Birkenau is not recommended by the memorial for children under 14. Consider carefully whether to bring younger kids.
  • Krakow is compact and flat in the center, making it easy to explore with children, and there are playgrounds in the Planty.

Getting there

  • Krakow John Paul II International Airport (KRK) has mostly European flights; most US travelers connect via Warsaw, Frankfurt, Munich, or another hub.
  • A train from the airport reaches the main station in about 20 minutes.
  • Fast trains connect Krakow with Warsaw in about 2.5 hours, and Vienna and Prague are reachable by rail in about 6 to 8 hours or by overnight train.

Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.

Is Krakow worth visiting in winter?

Yes, especially in December for the Christmas market and the szopka contest. Expect cold, short days, and occasional poor air quality on still days.
