The best time to visit Berlin
A city that lives outdoors from May to September and hibernates in museums and clubs the rest of the year.

The straight answer
The best time to visit Berlin is May through September, with May, June, and September the sweet spot: long days, open-air everything, and none of the long gray winter.
Go between May and September, and if you can, pick May, June, or September. Berlin is a city of parks, lakes, canals, and beer gardens, and all of it switches on when the weather turns. In June the sun sets after 9:30pm and the whole city seems to live outside.
July and August are good, not perfect. Berlin is less crowded than Paris or Rome even at its peak, but hot spells happen, and many Berliners leave for the Baltic coast during school holidays. September is cooler and just as lively, with the Berlin Marathon and the art-world buzz of the new season.
November through March is gray, dark, and cold, with daylight ending before 4pm in December. That is also when Berlin's museums, concert halls, and club culture carry the city, the Christmas markets glow, and the Berlinale film festival takes over in February. It is a fine trip, just not the Berlin you see in photos.

Why go to Berlin
History you can walk through
The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, Checkpoint Charlie, the Topography of Terror, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe tell the 20th century in the places where it happened.
Museum Island and beyond
Five museums on one UNESCO-listed island, including the Neues Museum's bust of Nefertiti, plus the Gemaldegalerie, the Hamburger Bahnhof, and a gallery scene that runs across the city.
Space and green
Berlin has more green space than most capitals: the Tiergarten, the old airfield at Tempelhofer Feld, and lakes like the Wannsee and Schlachtensee within a train ride.
Price and nightlife
Food, transit, and hotels are cheap for a Western European capital, and the club scene is internationally famous and runs well past sunrise on weekends.
Things to do, and when to do them
Museum Island
The Pergamon Museum is closed for a multi-year renovation, so check what is open; the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie are the reliable stars.
Reichstag dome
Free, but you must register online in advance. Book days ahead in summer; evening slots show the city lit up.
Berlin Wall Memorial
The most complete surviving stretch of the border strip, with a watchtower view. Free and open daily outdoors.
Tempelhofer Feld
Walk or cycle the runways of the old airport. Kite-surfers, barbecues, and community gardens on summer evenings.
Sanssouci Park, Potsdam
Frederick the Great's summer palace, 40 minutes by S-Bahn. Timed tickets for the palace sell out on summer weekends.
East Side Gallery
The longest remaining stretch of the Wall, painted with murals. Go early before it turns into a selfie queue.
Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Walk the memorial's stelae field, then go down to the information center underneath, which is closed on Mondays.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival)
About ten days in mid February
One of the big three film festivals and unusually open to the public. Tickets release a few days ahead of each screening.
Karneval der Kulturen
Pentecost weekend, which moves between mid May and mid June
A multicultural street festival and parade through Kreuzberg.
Berlin Marathon
A weekend in late September
One of the fastest courses in the world and a huge citywide event. Hotels near the course book out early.
Festival of Lights
About ten days in October
Light projections on the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Cathedral, and other landmarks. Free and best on weeknights.
Christmas markets
Late November through December 23 to 31, varies by market
More than 60 markets, from the Gendarmenmarkt to Charlottenburg Palace and the Spandau old town.
New Year's Eve at the Brandenburg Gate
December 31 every year
A giant free open-air party and fireworks. Also a city full of private fireworks; wear sturdy shoes.
Beat the crowds
- Book the Reichstag dome and major Museum Island tickets online. Walk-up Reichstag visits are rarely possible in season.
- Visit Museum Island on weekday mornings, and save Thursday evenings, when some state museums stay open later, for the big galleries.
- Stay in Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, or Friedrichshain rather than around Alexanderplatz: better food and a real neighborhood feel.
- Check the Berlin Marathon and major trade fair dates before booking a September or October trip; hotel rates can double on those weeks.
Open or closed
- Many museums close on Mondays, including several on Museum Island. Plan outdoor memorials and Tempelhof for that day.
- Sunday shopping is restricted by law: most shops close, but museums, cafes, and flea markets like the Mauerpark market thrive.
- The Pergamon Museum's main building is closed for a multi-year renovation, with partial reopening planned in stages. Check the Staatliche Museen site before planning around it.
- Beer gardens, lake beaches, and open-air cinemas are seasonal, roughly May to September.
With kids in tow
- Berlin Zoo and the Aquarium, the Natural History Museum's giant Brachiosaurus skeleton, and the German Museum of Technology are standout kid stops.
- The city is full of playgrounds and flat bike paths; renting bikes as a family is easy and safe on the park routes.
- Summer lake days at Wannsee or the Muggelsee are what Berlin families do on hot weekends.
- For older kids and homeschool families, the Wall Memorial and the Stasi Museum make Cold War history concrete in a way no textbook can.
Getting there
- Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has limited US nonstop service, New York area routes among them; most travelers connect through Frankfurt, Munich, or another European hub.
- The FEX airport express and regional trains reach the central station in about 30 minutes.
- Fast trains connect Berlin with Hamburg in under 2 hours, Munich in about 4 to 4.5 hours, and Prague in about 4.5 hours.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
