What March is like in Krakow

March is cool, with highs near 46F (8C), and spring arrives late. Many days still feel wintry. Crowds and prices remain low, and in years when Easter falls early, Easter markets start to appear. The big sights are open and easy to book, often only a day or two ahead.

It suits travelers who want low prices and are happy to dress in layers. Families on spring break will find short lines at Wieliczka and Wawel. If you want warm days and blossoms, wait until late April or May, when the Planty park turns green.

01

Wieliczka Salt Mine

The underground chapels carved from salt are a perfect cool weather outing. Check age suitability for younger kids, since the tour has many steps.

02

Easter markets in some years

When Easter is early, markets on the Main Square sell painted eggs and holiday food.

03

Schindler's Factory

The city history museum's branch is easier to book before summer, when timed tickets sell out.

What to pack for March

  • A warm jacket and layers
  • Waterproof shoes
  • A compact umbrella
  • Gloves and a hat

Beat the crowds

  • Book Auschwitz-Birkenau entry and Wieliczka tickets online as soon as your dates are set in summer. Walk-ups are often turned away.
  • Visit the Main Square and St. Mary's early in the morning before tour groups arrive.
  • Stay in Kazimierz or Podgorze for a quieter base with better food than the Old Town tourist strip.
  • Avoid Friday and Saturday nights in the Old Town in summer if you want calm; the bar crowds peak then.

Know before you go

  • The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial closes on January 1, December 25, and Easter Sunday.
  • Poland restricts Sunday trading, so most shops close on most Sundays. Restaurants and museums stay open.
  • Some museums, including branches of the city history museum, have free or reduced hours on specific weekdays and close on others. Check each museum's schedule.
  • Major holidays like Easter, All Saints' Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day close many shops and some sights.
