What July is like in Great Barrier Reef

July is peak season. The weather is dry and sunny, with highs near 79F (26C), but the water is at its coolest, around 73F (23C), so a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit helps. Southern Australians escape their winter here, school holidays run through mid July, and hotels and boats are at their busiest and priciest of the year.

It suits families on winter school holidays and whale watchers who want the most reliable weather. If you dislike crowds or high prices, or you want warmer water, September and October give you the same dry skies with more room and a warmer sea.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Great Barrier Reef this month.

01

Last weeks of minke season

Dwarf minke whales are still around the Ribbon Reefs in July on permitted liveaboards. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the odds are good.

02

Humpbacks in the Whitsundays

Humpback whales pass through the Whitsundays, and some sailing trips spot them from the deck.

03

Heart Reef from the air

Clear winter skies make a scenic flight from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island over Heart Reef a good use of a morning.

What to pack for July

  • A 3mm or 5mm wetsuit, or rent one on board
  • A warm layer for windy boat decks
  • Seasickness tablets for longer outer reef crossings
  • A dry bag for phones and cameras

Our timing tip

Book everything early, and try to travel in the second half of July, once most Australian school holidays have ended.

Beat the crowds

  • Choose September or October over July: dry-season conditions, warmer water, and fewer southern Australians on their winter escape.
  • Book smaller-capacity boats or a liveaboard; the biggest pontoon trips carry hundreds of passengers to the same sites.
  • Stay in Port Douglas rather than Cairns if you want a quieter base with quicker access to the Agincourt and Low Isles reefs.
  • Avoid the Easter, late June to mid July, late September, and Christmas to January school holiday periods when Australian families fill resorts.

Know before you go

  • Reef trips operate year-round, but cyclones and strong winds can cancel departures on short notice, especially from December to April.
  • In stinger season, coastal beaches in tropical Queensland rely on stinger nets for swimming; some nets are removed in heavy weather.
  • The Daintree region's roads and river crossings can be affected by flooding in the wet season.
  • Reef tours include the Environmental Management Charge (the reef tax), which funds reef management; it is collected by operators.
