What March is like in Fiji

March is still hot and humid, with highs near 88F (31C), but cyclone season starts to wind down late in the month. Rain arrives in bursts rather than all day, and between them the reefs and rainforests are at their greenest. Crowds are light and prices soft.

It is a mixed month that suits flexible, budget-minded travelers who can live with some rain and a little storm risk. Buy insurance and keep plans loose. If you can wait a few weeks, April is a much safer bet, and May brings true dry-season weather.

Make the most of March

What is especially good about Fiji this month.

01

Greenest time of year

The rainforest and hillsides of Viti Levu are at their greenest, lovely for a Sigatoka River jet boat or village tour.

02

Rafting the Navua

The river still runs well after the wet months, so rafting the Upper Navua canyon is a highlight.

03

Soft prices

Resorts still price for the wet season, so you can find good deals, especially later in the month.

What to pack for March

  • A rain jacket for bursts of rain
  • Lightweight, quick-dry clothing
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a sun hat
  • Water shoes

Our timing tip

Travel in the second half of March, when the storm risk is falling but wet-season prices are still in place.

Things to do in Fiji

Full guide
01

Island-hop the Yasawas

The classic route: a catamaran threads the chain daily, dropping travelers at beaches from backpacker to boutique. Buy a flexible hop-on pass and drift.

02

Dive the Rainbow Reef and Great White Wall

Off Taveuni, the signature soft-coral sites fire best on running tides; dry-season months bring the visibility the reef deserves.

Tickets and tours →

03

Snorkel with manta rays

Manta season in the Yasawas runs roughly May through October, when the rays channel-feed between islands; resorts run morning spotter boats.

Tickets and tours →

04

Take a village visit and kava ceremony

A guided visit with a sevusevu (kava root) presentation is the cultural heart of a Fiji trip. Dress modestly and let your host lead the protocol.

Tickets and tours →

05

Ride the Sigatoka River or the Navua rapids

Jet boats and village tours run the Sigatoka; rafting the Upper Navua's canyon is Fiji's green cathedral, best in and after wetter months when the river runs.

06

Laze on the Coral Coast

Viti Levu's southern shore strings resorts, reef flats, and the famous beaches within an easy drive of Nadi: the no-boat-required version of Fiji.

Beat the crowds

  • Book May, September, or October: identical dry-season weather to July at a clear discount, with kids' clubs and dive boats running below capacity.
  • Check the Australian and New Zealand school-holiday calendars before picking dates; they, more than the weather, decide when family resorts are full.
  • Split your stay: a few nights on Viti Levu for ease, then an outer island (Yasawas, Taveuni, Kadavu) where the crowds thin to whoever shares your boat.
  • Choose adults-only or dive-focused properties in the holiday windows if you are traveling without kids; the family resorts are joyfully loud in June and July.

Know before you go

  • Cyclone season runs November through April, with the highest risk roughly January through March: resorts stay open by default, but storms can suspend boat transfers, close airports briefly, and rearrange a week. Buy travel insurance and build slack into wet-season trips.
  • Sunday is observed seriously: many villages and towns quiet down, most shops close, and some activities pause. Resorts run normally; church singing, if you are invited, is a highlight, not a closure.
  • Boat and seaplane transfers to outer islands run on daylight and weather; late international arrivals often mean a first night near Nadi before connecting onward.
  • The Christmas through New Year fortnight is fully open and fully booked, at wet-season weather and peak-season prices, thanks to the Australian and New Zealand holiday exodus.
