What January is like in Croatia
January is the coast at its emptiest and cheapest. Highs sit near 50F (10C), the sea is cold, and most island hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs are closed until spring. Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik keep running as real cities, and their old towns feel calm and local. Ferries run fewer, slower sailings, and the cold bura wind can cancel them.
This month suits city-break travelers who want Roman ruins and stone streets without crowds, plus anyone catching the tail end of Zagreb's Advent season in early January. It is the wrong month for beaches, islands, or swimming. For a real coast trip, wait for May, June, or September.
Make the most of January
What is especially good about Croatia this month.
Zagreb Advent's last days
The capital's Christmas markets run into early January. Come in the first week to catch the lights and mulled wine.
Diocletian's Palace to yourself
Split's Roman palace is free to wander at any hour, and in January you share it mostly with locals. It is a very different place without summer crowds.
Dubrovnik's walls without the queue
The walls stay open year-round on shorter hours. In winter you can walk the full circuit at an easy pace with sea views all the way around.
What to pack for January
- A warm, windproof jacket for the bura
- Waterproof shoes for slick stone streets
- A hat and gloves for Zagreb
- Layers for heated indoor spaces
Our timing tip
Base yourself in Split or Dubrovnik rather than on an island, and leave a spare day in case wind cancels a ferry or closes a coast road.

What's on in January
Things to do in Croatia
Dubrovnik city walls
Walk the full circuit at opening time or in the last entry window; midday in season is brutal heat and cruise crowds. Cable car to Mount Srd for the postcard overview.
Diocletian's Palace, Split
A 1,700-year-old Roman palace with a city living inside it. Free to wander at all hours; the cellars and cathedral bell tower are the ticketed add-ons.
Hvar
The glamour island: Venetian harbor, fortress views, and the Pakleni islets a water-taxi hop away. Lavender blooms inland in early summer.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Sixteen terraced lakes joined by waterfalls. Buy timed entry ahead and take the first slot; the boardwalks jam by late morning in season.
Krka National Park
Waterfall terraces near Sibenik, easier to reach from Split than Plitvice. Swimming near the falls is no longer permitted; go for the boardwalks and boat trips.
Korcula
A quieter, marbled mini-Dubrovnik on a green island, with excellent white wine from the surrounding villages and far fewer day-trippers.
Beat the crowds
- Check the cruise schedule: Dubrovnik's port calendar is public, and picking a light-ship day (or doing the old town before 9am and after 6pm) changes the entire experience.
- Sleep on the islands, not just in Split and Dubrovnik: day-tripper waves leave Hvar and Korcula by early evening, and the towns hand themselves back to overnight guests.
- Book Plitvice's first entry slot and walk the upper lakes first; tour buses arrive from the coast late morning and cluster at the lower falls.
- Swap one famous stop for its quiet twin: Trogir or Sibenik instead of a second Split day, Vis instead of a second Hvar day, Ston's walls instead of another lap of Dubrovnik's.
Know before you go
- The coastal off-season is a real shutdown: from roughly November through March, most island hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs close, and small towns like Hvar run on a skeleton of year-round businesses. Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik keep functioning as cities, but book dinner options in advance in winter.
- Ferry and catamaran schedules shrink dramatically outside roughly May to September: fast seasonal catamarans stop, and islands fall back to fewer, slower car-ferry sailings. Winter island-hopping needs slack in the itinerary for weather cancellations.
- Plitvice and Krka stay open year-round with shorter winter hours; Plitvice's upper-lake routes can close for ice and snow, and winter there is beautiful but limited.
- The bura, a violent cold north wind, can cancel ferries and close bridges and coastal roads for a day or two at a time, mostly between fall and spring. Build a buffer around any hard travel connection.
