What March is like in Croatia

March brings the first hints of spring. Highs near 57F (14C) make walking pleasant on sunny days, and the old towns are uncrowded. The sea is still cold, though, and much of the island tourism world is closed or just getting ready. Ferries still run winter schedules, and the bura wind can still blow.

It suits travelers who want old towns and Roman history at low prices, maybe with a winter visit to Plitvice. It does not suit beach lovers or island-hoppers. If you can wait a few weeks, late April and May bring open terraces, greener parks, and more ferries for only a little more money.

The lakes and waterfalls run strong with snowmelt and the boardwalks are nearly empty. Some upper routes may still be closed after icy weather.

Uncrowded old towns

Trogir, Sibenik, and Split are easy to explore without tour groups. It is a good month for slow wandering and photography.

Off-season hotel rates

Prices stay at winter levels. You can stay in the heart of an old town for much less than in summer.

Beat the crowds

Check the cruise schedule: Dubrovnik's port calendar is public, and picking a light-ship day (or doing the old town before 9am and after 6pm) changes the entire experience.
Sleep on the islands, not just in Split and Dubrovnik: day-tripper waves leave Hvar and Korcula by early evening, and the towns hand themselves back to overnight guests.
Book Plitvice's first entry slot and walk the upper lakes first; tour buses arrive from the coast late morning and cluster at the lower falls.
Swap one famous stop for its quiet twin: Trogir or Sibenik instead of a second Split day, Vis instead of a second Hvar day, Ston's walls instead of another lap of Dubrovnik's.

Know before you go

The coastal off-season is a real shutdown: from roughly November through March, most island hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs close, and small towns like Hvar run on a skeleton of year-round businesses. Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik keep functioning as cities, but book dinner options in advance in winter.
Ferry and catamaran schedules shrink dramatically outside roughly May to September: fast seasonal catamarans stop, and islands fall back to fewer, slower car-ferry sailings. Winter island-hopping needs slack in the itinerary for weather cancellations.
Plitvice and Krka stay open year-round with shorter winter hours; Plitvice's upper-lake routes can close for ice and snow, and winter there is beautiful but limited.
The bura, a violent cold north wind, can cancel ferries and close bridges and coastal roads for a day or two at a time, mostly between fall and spring. Build a buffer around any hard travel connection.
