The best time to visit Bruges
A medieval town small enough to walk in an afternoon, which is exactly why the day-trippers swamp it. Timing, and sleeping over, fix that.

The straight answer
The best time to visit Bruges is April through June or September through October, ideally midweek and with at least one night in town, when the canals and squares are calm before and after the day-trip crowds.
Go in April through June, or September and October, and stay at least one night. Bruges is a compact medieval city of canals, brick gables, and cobbled squares, and its biggest problem is that most visitors arrive by train or coach around 10am and leave by 5pm. Stay over and you get the early mornings and the evenings, when the town is quiet and the canals reflect the lamplight.
Summer weekends are the most crowded time, with cruise passengers from the port of Zeebrugge adding to the day-trip crush. July and August are pleasant, rarely hot, but the Markt and the main canal stretches can feel like a theme park at midday.
December is the other great window: Christmas markets on the Markt and Simon Stevinplein, an ice rink, and the winter light festival, with the town looking like a storybook. January to March is gray, damp, and very quiet, cheap, and fine if you are here for beer, chocolate, and museums rather than canal-side lingering.

Why go to Bruges
A complete medieval town
The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with canals, the Belfry, the Markt, and brick houses that look much as they did when Bruges was a great trading city.
Flemish masters
The Groeninge Museum and the Memling collection in St. John's Hospital hold works by Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling, and Michelangelo's Madonna and Child is in the Church of Our Lady.
Beer and chocolate
Belgian beer culture is UNESCO-listed, and Bruges has historic breweries and cozy beer bars, plus chocolatiers on every street.
Easy cycling
Flat roads and canal paths lead out to the town of Damme and the polder landscape, one of the best short bike rides in Belgium.
Things to do, and when to do them
The Belfry
Climb the 366 steps for the view over the rooftops. Timed tickets help; go at opening or late afternoon.
Groeninge Museum
Flemish Primitives including Jan van Eyck. Small and quiet compared with the crowds outside.
Canal boat tour
The classic 30 minute loop. Take the first boats of the morning to avoid the queues; service is reduced in winter.
Begijnhof and Minnewater
The white houses of the Beguinage and the 'Lake of Love' are serene at dawn, busy by midday.
Basilica of the Holy Blood
A two-level chapel on the Burg square holding a revered relic, the center of the Ascension Day procession.
De Halve Maan Brewery
A family brewery in the center with tours and a beer pipeline under the old town streets.
Bike to Damme
About 7 kilometers along the tree-lined canal to a tiny medieval town. Rent bikes near the station.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Bruges Beer Festival
A weekend in early February
Belgian breweries pour hundreds of beers at a venue in the city center.
Procession of the Holy Blood
Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter, usually May
A UNESCO-listed procession with the relic and costumed scenes from the Bible and Bruges history. Stands sell out; arrive early.
Cactus Festival
A weekend in July
An open-air music festival in the Minnewater park.
Christmas markets
Late November through early January
Markets on the Markt and Simon Stevinplein, an ice rink, and seasonal lights.
Beat the crowds
- Sleep in Bruges. Walk the Markt, the Burg, and the Rozenhoedkaai before 9am and after 6pm, when day-trippers are gone.
- Visit midweek rather than on weekends, and check if cruise ships are in at Zeebrugge.
- Spend the busiest hours in museums, on a bike ride to Damme, or in quieter neighborhoods like Sint-Anna in the east.
- Book the Belfry online, and go to the Holy Blood Basilica at opening.
Open or closed
- Several Musea Brugge museums close on Mondays. Check before planning a Monday visit.
- Canal boats run most of the year but can pause in freezing weather, storms, or winter weekdays.
- Some restaurants close one or two days a week, often midweek, and a few take winter holidays in January.
- Christmas Day and New Year's Day close many sights and shops.
With kids in tow
- Kids love the canal boats, climbing the Belfry, and the horse-drawn carriages. Chocolate shops with demonstrations are a hit.
- Boudewijn Seapark, a small amusement park just outside town, is an easy half-day for families in the warmer months.
- The town is compact and flat, making it easy with strollers, though cobblestones can be bumpy.
- Combine Bruges with the beach at Knokke or De Haan on the Belgian coast, a short train or tram ride away.
Getting there
- Fly into Brussels Airport (BRU), which has nonstops from several US cities, New York and Washington among them; trains to Bruges take about 1.5 hours.
- From Brussels city center, trains to Bruges take about an hour. Ghent is 25 minutes away, and Paris or London are reachable via Brussels by high-speed train.
- Bruges is car-unfriendly in the center. Park at the station garage if driving.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
