Midsummer in Sweden (Midsommar)
The longest days of the year, maypoles, flower crowns, herring, and songs about little frogs.

The straight answer
Swedish Midsummer is celebrated on Midsummer Eve, the Friday between June 19 and 25 every year, with most of the country heading to the countryside for maypole dancing and long meals outdoors.
Midsummer is arguably the most important holiday on the Swedish calendar after Christmas, and it falls on a predictable rule: Midsummer Eve (Midsommarafton) is always the Friday between June 19 and 25, and Midsummer Day is the Saturday after. It celebrates the light, and in Sweden that means very long days, with the sun barely setting in the north and a long twilight in Stockholm.
The celebration is a country one. Swedes leave the cities for summer houses, islands, and villages, and gather around a maypole decorated with greenery and flowers. They dance, eat pickled herring and new potatoes, sing drinking songs with schnapps, and finish with strawberries and cream.
The paradox for visitors: Stockholm itself goes quiet on Midsummer Eve. Many shops and restaurants close, and the city empties. To experience Midsummer properly, you need to join a public celebration or head out of town.
The event, explained
The raising of the maypole (midsommarstang) in the afternoon of Midsummer Eve is the central event, followed by ring dances around it. The most famous dance is Sma grodorna, the little frogs, where adults and children hop around the pole pretending to be frogs.
Flower crowns are worn by many, especially children. According to tradition, if you pick seven kinds of flowers on Midsummer night and put them under your pillow, you will dream of your future partner.
The meal is the heart of the day: several types of pickled herring, new potatoes with dill, sour cream and chives, cured salmon, and fresh strawberries. Schnapps is served with singing between each glass.
Dalarna, the region in central Sweden around Lake Siljan, including towns like Leksand and Rattvik, is known for the most traditional celebrations, with folk dress and music. In Stockholm, the open-air museum Skansen hosts a large public celebration with dancing and music.
How to play it right
- 01Book lodging in the countryside several months ahead, especially in Dalarna and on the Stockholm archipelago islands. Midsummer weekend is one of the busiest of the Swedish summer.
- 02If you stay in Stockholm, plan for closures on Midsummer Eve: many shops, restaurants, and offices close or shorten hours. Buy food ahead and check museum hours.
- 03Skansen's public celebration is the easiest option for visitors staying in Stockholm; it draws a big crowd, so arrive early.
- 04Weather is unpredictable: highs near 70F (21C) with a real chance of rain, and cool evenings. Bring a sweater and a rain jacket; Swedes celebrate outdoors regardless.
- 05Midsummer also marks the start of the Swedish summer holiday. Trains and ferries to the countryside fill up; book ahead.
- 06If you are invited to a Swedish Midsummer, bring a small gift, learn one drinking song, and be ready to dance like a frog.
With kids in tow
- Midsummer is a family holiday, and children are at the center of the maypole dances. Public celebrations at Skansen and in local villages are welcoming to visitors with kids.
- Long daylight means late bedtimes. Bring an eye mask if your kids need darkness to sleep.
- Flower crown making and frog dancing are easy wins with children, and most celebrations provide materials for the crowns.
