The straight answer
Rio's Carnival happens in the week before Ash Wednesday every year, usually falling in February and occasionally early March, with the main samba school parades on the Sunday and Monday nights before.
Rio Carnival is the largest carnival celebration in the world, the culmination of a season that seizes the whole city: millions of people in the streets, the great samba schools parading through the Sambadrome in the most extravagant competitive spectacle in existence, and a soundtrack of drums that simply does not stop for five days. It runs in the week before Ash Wednesday, so the dates move with Easter, landing usually in February and occasionally in early March, from the Friday before through Fat Tuesday.
There are really two Carnivals, and the best trips do both. The Sambadrome parades are the televised icon: each top-division samba school brings thousands of costumed performers, towering floats, and a new song, judged in a competition Rio takes as seriously as any World Cup. The blocos are the free half: hundreds of street parties, from neighborhood brass bands at dawn to mega-blocos drawing hundreds of thousands, that begin weeks before the official dates and run all day, everywhere.
It is also midsummer in Rio, hot and humid with highs commonly around 90F (32C), and the city runs at maximum intensity in every sense. Book early, pace yourself, and it is the most joyful large-scale event a traveler can attend.
The event, explained
The Sambadrome, a purpose-built 700-meter parade avenue with grandstands, hosts the heart of the competition on the Sunday and Monday nights of Carnival, when the elite Special Group schools parade one after another from evening until past dawn, each given over an hour of thundering, meticulously themed procession. Preliminary and access-group parades run other nights, and the champions parade again the following Saturday, a cheaper, celebratory rerun of the winners.
The blocos are Carnival as the city lives it: each street party has its own character, from family-friendly morning bands in Ipanema and Leblon to costume-heavy classics in Santa Teresa and downtown mega-crowds behind sound trucks. They are free, unticketed, and listed in city schedules each season; locals plan their days bloco to bloco like a festival lineup.
Around those two poles: samba school rehearsals open to visitors in the months before (the pre-Carnival months are a destination in themselves), glamorous and expensive balls including the famous one at the Copacabana Palace, and a citywide costume culture in which wearing something, anything festive, marks you as a participant rather than a spectator.
How to play it right
- 01Fix the year's dates first (the week before Ash Wednesday, moving with Easter), then book flights and lodging four to six months out; Copacabana, Ipanema, and anywhere near the action sell out at several times normal rates, often with minimum stays.
- 02Buy Sambadrome tickets through official channels or established agencies months ahead. Grandstand sectors are the affordable, high-atmosphere choice; front-box and allocated seats cost more; sectors near the center of the avenue see the schools at full spread. Sunday and Monday are the elite nights.
- 03Go to blocos like a local: pick two or three per day from the official schedule, arrive near the start time when crowds are lighter, and bail to the beach or a long lunch before heat and density peak. Morning blocos are the gentlest and often the most charming.
- 04Carry almost nothing: a copy of your ID, a small amount of cash, and a phone you can afford to lose, ideally in a front zip pouch. Dense bloco crowds are world-class pickpocket territory; this is the one Carnival rule everyone repeats because it is true.
- 05Plan the Sambadrome night properly: parades run from evening past dawn, so eat first, bring water (rules on containers vary), pick a few schools you most want to see rather than forcing all of them, and pre-arrange transport home from the exit gates.
- 06Consider the champions parade the following Saturday if tickets or budget block the main nights: the winning schools parade again at lower prices with a party atmosphere, and the blocos are still going that weekend.
With kids in tow
- Carnival with kids is workable with curation: morning and early-afternoon neighborhood blocos, especially the ones explicitly billed as family blocos in Ipanema, Leblon, and Jardim Botanico, are full of local children in costume, and beach days absorb the rest.
- The Sambadrome is loud and runs brutally late, but the experience is spectacular for older kids; choose the earlier schools of the evening and leave before midnight rather than attempting the full dawn marathon. Small children and the massive night crowds do not mix.
- Skip the mega-blocos and downtown crush entirely with children: crowd densities reach genuinely unsafe-for-little-ones levels, and the same music and costumes exist at one-tenth density a neighborhood away.
