Venice Carnival runs for roughly two weeks ending on Shrove Tuesday, so it usually falls across late January and February, with the exact dates moving with Easter each year.
For about two weeks each winter, Venice resurrects the masked world of its eighteenth-century golden age. Carnival fills the calli and campi with figures in full historical costume, the bauta and the moretta and gowns that take months to make, posing in the fog on the Grand Canal at dawn as if two centuries never happened. It ends on Shrove Tuesday, the eve of Lent, which ties its dates to Easter: most years the festival spans late January and February.
Modern Carnival is a revival (the tradition was suppressed at the Republic's fall in 1797 and reborn in 1979), and it now draws enormous crowds to a city that is already the world's most delicate host. Piazza San Marco on a Carnival weekend is a costume spectacle and a crowd crush in equal measure; the same masked figures drifting through a silent Cannaregio morning are pure magic. Which Carnival you get depends almost entirely on when and where you stand.
The season's secret weapon is winter Venice itself: cold, often misty, occasionally flooded, and hauntingly beautiful, with hotel rates outside the Carnival weekends at their yearly lows. A trip bracketing the festival's quieter weekdays gets both the masks and the melancholy.
The event, explained
The public program centers on Piazza San Marco: costume promenades and the famous costume contest on the main stage, historical pageants like the procession of the Marys, and headline spectacles that vary by year (the traditional angel's flight from the campanile has in some years been reimagined or replaced). Around the edges: children's programming, boat parades on the canals, and mask-makers' workshops, the artisan heart of the whole affair, open for visits and classes.
The private program is the legend: masked balls in Grand Canal palaces, from historically rigorous dinners with period orchestras to glossy modern galas. Tickets are expensive (hundreds of euros and up, with costume rental extra and often required) and book out well ahead; for many attendees one ball, one costume, one night justifies the whole trip.
Between the two lives the street theater that costs nothing: the costumed figures themselves, who come to be photographed and pose with theatrical patience, especially in the early mornings at San Marco, the Rialto, and along the misty fondamente. How to play it right
- 01Fix the year's dates from Shrove Tuesday backward, then decide your Carnival: the two weekends and the final days are the full-spectacle crush, while the midweek days between them offer costumes, events, and a breathable city.
- 02Book lodging three to five months out for Carnival weekends; central hotels fill and price up hard. Staying in Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, or Castello rather than around San Marco buys quiet nights a ten-minute walk from the spectacle.
- 03For a ball, book one to three months ahead (longer for the famous ones), confirm the dress code, and arrange costume rental early: Venice's ateliers rent full historical dress but the good inventory goes fast in season.
- 04Do the dawn patrol at least once: costumed figures pose at San Marco and along the water in the first light, before the day-trip crowds arrive around mid-morning. It is the best photography and the closest thing to time travel the festival offers.
- 05Buy a real mask from a real bottega (artisan papier-mache, not the imported plastic on every stall); it is the festival's proper souvenir, and workshops offer mask-decorating sessions worth booking.
- 06Pack for wet winter: temperatures around 40F (4C), fog, and the possibility of acqua alta high water flooding low squares; the city's raised walkways and an app-checked tide forecast handle it, but waterproof shoes earn their space.
With kids in tow
- Carnival is surprisingly good with kids: the festival grew from a tradition where children in costume are the point, mask-decorating workshops are made for small hands, and the official program usually includes children's shows and parades. A caped, masked eight-year-old in Venice is a happy eight-year-old.
- The San Marco weekend crush is the one hazard: dense, slow, camera-elbowed crowds that are miserable at kid height. Do the piazza early morning, spend midday in quieter sestieri, and let the costumes come to you.
- Winter Venice with children needs a weather plan: cold and rain send you into Doge's Palace, the Natural History Museum, and hot-chocolate stops (Venetian cioccolata calda is practically pudding), all of which are excellent cards to hold.
