What July is like in Yosemite

July is hot in the Valley, with highs near 90F (32C). Everything is open and everything is crowded. Valley traffic and parking are at their worst, and wildfire smoke is possible some years. The good news is up high: Tuolumne Meadows is at its best, with green meadows and cooler air.

It suits families on summer break who plan well and spend their time in the high country. It is a poor fit for anyone who hates crowds or heat. For waterfalls, come in May; for fewer people and full road access, choose September.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Yosemite this month.

01

Tuolumne Meadows at its best

Wildflowers, granite domes and cooler temperatures make the high country the place to be.

02

Tioga Road drive

The scenic road across the high country is open, with lakes and viewpoints along the way.

03

Escape to Wawona or Hetch Hetchy

These corners of the park are far quieter than Yosemite Valley in summer.

What to pack for July

  • A wide-brim hat and sunscreen
  • Plenty of water and snacks
  • A warm layer for the high country
  • An N95 mask in case of wildfire smoke

Our timing tip

Enter the park before 8am and use the free Valley shuttle, since parking in the Valley fills by mid morning.

Beat the crowds

  • Enter the park before 8am in summer; parking in the Valley fills by mid morning on busy days, and the free Valley shuttle is the way around.
  • Visit midweek. The park's own analysis found that most weekdays kept available parking, while weekends and holidays are where congestion builds.
  • Spend summer days in the high country along Tioga Road or at Wawona and Hetch Hetchy instead of Yosemite Valley.
  • Book in-park lodging and campgrounds the moment they open for your dates; they sell out quickly for summer.

Know before you go

  • Yosemite is open all year, but Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road are seasonal: typically open from late May or June until the first major storm in November. Opening dates vary widely with snowpack.
  • Timed-entry or peak-hours reservations have been required in some recent years and not in others. Yosemite did not use a timed reservation system in 2026. Check the park's current entrance rules before any trip.
  • Half Dome cables are typically up from late May to mid October, and a permit, awarded by preseason and daily lottery, is required to climb them.
  • Winter storms can require tire chains on park roads at short notice, even in the Valley; carry them from November through March.
