What June is like in Tokyo

June is humid with frequent rain, and highs near 78F (26C). The rainy season, called tsuyu, usually settles in by mid month. It is rarely a total washout, and hydrangeas bloom across the city and in Kamakura. Crowds are light and prices soften, which makes it a quiet value month.

It suits budget travelers and museum lovers who do not mind an umbrella. Families can do well by planning indoor days at teamLab and the Miraikan. Pack a good umbrella and quick-dry shoes and it is very workable. If you want dry weather, go in late May or October instead.

Make the most of June

What is especially good about Tokyo this month.

01

Hydrangea season

Kamakura's hydrangea temples are at their best in June, and the rain makes the colors glow.

02

Museum days

Rainy afternoons are ideal for teamLab Planets, the Miraikan and the city's great museums, which are calmer than in spring.

03

Softer prices

Hotels and flights dip after spring, so June is one of the better value months.

What to pack for June

  • A compact umbrella
  • Quick-dry clothes for humid days
  • Shoes that can handle wet streets
  • A light layer for cold air conditioning

Our timing tip

Visit Kamakura's hydrangea temples on a weekday morning, since weekends bring long lines.

Beat the crowds

  • Do headline temples and markets before 8am. Tokyo sights open early, tour groups do not, and the difference at Senso-ji or Tsukiji is night and day.
  • For cherry blossoms, skip midday at Ueno and go at first light, or pick quieter spots like the Kanda River or Aoyama Cemetery over the Instagram rivers.
  • Never plan intercity travel during Golden Week or Obon without reserved seats booked as far ahead as the system allows.
  • Book timed-entry attractions (Shibuya Sky, teamLab, Ghibli Museum) the moment your dates firm up; they cap capacity and simply sell out.

Know before you go

  • December 29 through January 3: the New Year holiday closes many restaurants, shops, and some museums, while shrines see their biggest crowds of the year for first visits (hatsumode).
  • Golden Week (late April to early May) closes nothing, but sells out everything: treat trains and hotels like concert tickets.
  • Many museums close on Mondays, and when a Monday is a national holiday they close Tuesday instead. Check the specific museum before building a day around it.
  • Typhoon season (roughly August through early October) occasionally halts trains and flights for a day. Build one flexible day into any September itinerary.
