What May is like in Stockholm

May is when Stockholm wakes up. Highs reach about 61F (16C), the days are very long, trees are in leaf, and cafes move outside. Archipelago ferries start expanding their schedules, though full summer service does not start until mid June. Crowds and prices are moderate, and the city feels fresh and happy after the long winter.

It suits couples, families, and first-timers who want long days and fresh spring scenery without peak summer crowds. It is less ideal for anyone set on swimming or full archipelago island-hopping. For those, wait for July, when the water is warmest and the ferries run full schedules.

Make the most of May

What is especially good about Stockholm this month.

01

Long, bright days

Sunset comes late, so evenings are made for waterfront walks.

02

Cafes move outside

Outdoor tables pop up across the city, and locals soak up the sun.

03

Grona Lund opens

The amusement park on Djurgarden runs roughly spring to early fall, and May is a calm time to go with older kids.

What to pack for May

  • A light jacket
  • Layers
  • Sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes

Our timing tip

Check ferry schedules, since archipelago service is still limited until mid June.

Beat the crowds

  • Hit the Vasa Museum and Skansen at opening, before cruise passengers arrive mid morning.
  • Take an early commuter ferry to the archipelago rather than a tour boat; you get more time on the islands for less money.
  • Book Midsummer weekend lodging and activities well ahead; the rest of summer is easier.
  • Explore Sodermalm and Djurgarden in the afternoon while tour groups are in Gamla Stan.

Know before you go

  • The archipelago ferries run full schedules only in high summer, roughly mid June to mid August. Off season, service is sparse and many island cafes and inns close.
  • In July, many independent restaurants and shops close for two to four weeks of summer vacation. Check any place you are set on.
  • Midsummer Eve and Midsummer Day close many shops and restaurants in the city as Swedes head out of town.
  • The City Hall tower is open only in the warmer months. City Hall itself is by guided tour and closes for some official events, including around the Nobel banquet.
