The straight answer

The best time to visit Seville is March to May or late October to November, when it is warm and sunny without the 95F to 105F (35C to 41C) heat of July and August.

Go in spring, from March to May, or in late October and November. Spring is Seville's great season: orange blossom scents the whole old town in March and April, the patios fill with flowers, and the city puts on its two biggest events, Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the Feria de Abril.

The summer warning is real. Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe, with average July and August highs near 97F (36C) and heat waves that push past 105F (41C). Locals retreat indoors from early afternoon until evening, many family restaurants close for part of August, and walking between sights at midday is genuinely unpleasant.

Winter is a sleeper pick. Highs are near 61F (16C) in January, skies are often clear, hotel rates drop, and the Alcazar and cathedral lines shrink. The catch with spring is that Holy Week and the Feria send prices soaring, so book early or plan around them.

Beat the crowds

  • Book the Alcazar's first entry slot and the cathedral right after opening. Tour groups build by 10:30am.
  • Plan around Holy Week and the Feria if you do not want them. The weeks just before or after offer the same spring weather at far lower prices.
  • Eat and move on Spanish time: sights in the morning, rest in the afternoon heat, and tapas from 8:30pm or later.
  • Stay in Triana or near the Alameda rather than directly in Santa Cruz for quieter nights and more local bars.

Open or closed

  • Many shops close in the afternoon, roughly 2pm to 5pm, and reopen into the evening. Big chains and the main sights stay open through the day.
  • In August, some family-run restaurants and shops close for a week or more while owners take holidays.
  • During Holy Week, procession routes block streets and some sights change hours. The cathedral has special schedules.
  • During the Feria, many local businesses keep short hours because the city is at the fairground.
  • Some sights, including the cathedral, are closed or limited to worship on certain days or times. Check before you go.

With kids in tow

  • Maria Luisa Park is the family escape: rowboats at Plaza de Espana, shade, and pedal cars for hire.
  • Kids love the Metropol Parasol walkway and the ramps up the Giralda, which were built for a horse and rider rather than stairs.
  • In late spring and early fall, plan midday rest breaks with kids; afternoons get hot quickly.
  • For homeschool families, the Alcazar and cathedral tell the story of Moorish Spain, the Reconquista, and the age of exploration in one morning; the Archive of the Indies is next door.

Getting there

  • Seville Airport (SVQ) has good European connections but few or no US nonstops. Most travelers connect through Madrid or another European hub.
  • The high-speed AVE train from Madrid takes about 2.5 hours, and often beats flying door to door.
  • The old town is compact and walkable; the tram and metro cover a few routes, and taxis are inexpensive for short hops.

Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
