The straight answer
The best time to visit the Algarve is May to June or September to early October, when the beaches are warm and sunny, the sea is swimmable, and the July and August crowds and prices are gone.
Go in May and June, or September into early October. You get long sunny days in the high 70s to low 80s F (25C to 28C), a sea that is swimmable (bracing in May, pleasant by September), and beaches like Praia da Marinha and the coves around Lagos without the peak summer crush.
July and August are the Algarve at full capacity. Portuguese, British, and other European school holidays fill the resort towns, rental cars and villas cost the most, and the famous beaches and the Benagil cave boat trips get very busy. The weather is perfect, so it is a trade you make with open eyes.
Winter is mild and sunny for Europe, with highs near 61F (16C), making it a popular golf and walking season. The catch: many beach bars and seasonal restaurants in resort towns close from about November to March, it is not swimming weather for most people, and November and December bring the most rain. Towns like Faro, Tavira, and Lagos stay lived-in year-round.

Why go to the Algarve
Cliffs, coves, and sea caves
The western and central Algarve's golden limestone cliffs, arches, and grottoes around Lagos, Carvoeiro, and Benagil are some of Europe's most striking coastline.
A long, sunny season
The Algarve is one of the sunniest places in Europe, with beach weather from roughly May to October and mild winters.
Wilder west, calmer east
The Atlantic west coast near Sagres is rugged and surfy; the eastern Ria Formosa lagoon has barrier-island beaches and calmer water.
Seafood and simple pleasures
Grilled sardines, cataplana stews, and fresh fish in harbor towns like Olhao and Portimao are the local staples.
Things to do, and when to do them
Ponta da Piedade, Lagos
Rock pillars, arches, and grottoes best seen by small boat or kayak in calm morning water.
Benagil sea cave
The famous cave with a hole in the roof. Boat and kayak tours run most of the year; access rules for landing inside have tightened, so check current regulations.
Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
A clifftop walk from Praia da Marinha toward Benagil and beyond. Best in spring and autumn, early in the day.
Sagres and Cape St. Vincent
The windswept southwestern tip of Europe, with a clifftop fortress and famous sunsets.
Ria Formosa Natural Park
Lagoons and barrier-island beaches reachable by ferry from Olhao, Faro, and Tavira. Superb for birdwatching.
Tavira
A calmer, more traditional town in the east, with a Roman-style bridge and ferries to Ilha de Tavira beaches.
Rota Vicentina
Long-distance walking routes along the wild west coast, best from autumn to spring.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Loule Carnival
The days before Lent, February or March
The Algarve's best-known carnival, with parades of floats through Loule.
Almond blossom
Late January to February, varies by year
Almond trees bloom white across the inland hills, part of Algarve legend.
Silves Medieval Fair
August, varies by year
The old Moorish capital hosts a medieval fair with costumes, food, and performances around its red castle.
Olhao Seafood Festival (Festival do Marisco)
August, varies by year
A popular waterfront festival of seafood and concerts in the fishing town of Olhao.
Beat the crowds
- Take Ponta da Piedade and Benagil boat tours at the first departure of the day for calm water and fewer boats.
- Swap the busiest central beaches for the Ria Formosa islands or the west coast beaches, which are wilder and far less crowded.
- If you must go in July or August, book cars, villas, and popular restaurant tables early, and hit the beach by 9am.
- Stay in towns like Tavira or Lagos rather than high-rise resort strips for more character and quieter evenings outside peak season.
Open or closed
- Many beach bars, seasonal restaurants, and some hotels in resort areas close from about November to March. Larger towns stay open all year.
- Boat tours to the caves run much of the year but are frequently cancelled when seas are rough, especially in winter.
- Lifeguards typically staff major beaches from about June to September only; outside that window, check flags and conditions carefully.
- Some beaches along the cliffs are closed or restricted because of rockfall risk. Respect signs and do not sit directly below cliffs.
With kids in tow
- The eastern Algarve, around Tavira and the Ria Formosa, has calmer, shallower water that is easier for small kids.
- Waterparks and zoos near Albufeira, Lagos, and Guia are popular in summer. Look for shade and midday breaks.
- The Atlantic is cooler than the Mediterranean. Even in August, the west coast can feel chilly to children.
- For homeschool families, Sagres and Lagos tie into the Age of Discovery, with the fortress and Lagos's old slave market building offering serious history lessons.
Getting there
- Faro Airport (FAO) is the gateway, with many European flights. From the US, most travelers connect through Lisbon or another European hub.
- Lisbon to the Algarve takes about 3 hours by train or car, making it an easy extension of a Lisbon trip.
- A rental car is the easiest way to explore beyond the main towns; buses and the coastal rail line cover the main towns but slowly.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
