What January is like in the Algarve

January in the Algarve is mild, quiet, and cheap. Highs sit near 61F (16C), with some rainy days between long spells of winter sun. Many beach bars and seasonal restaurants in the resort areas are closed, but larger towns like Lagos, Tavira, and Faro stay open all year. Late in the month, almond trees can start to bloom white across the inland hills. The sea is too cold for most swimmers.

This month suits golfers, walkers, and anyone who wants a calm, low-cost winter escape. It is not a beach month. If you want sand and swimming, aim for May, June, or September instead.

Make the most of January

What is especially good about the Algarve this month.

01

Winter coastal walks

Cool, clear days are good for clifftop walks, and you will have the trails nearly to yourself. Stay back from cliff edges after rain.

02

Early almond blossom

In some years, almond trees start blooming white in the inland hills by late January.

03

Quiet town life in Tavira

The old town and its Roman-style bridge are calm and local in winter, with open cafes and markets.

What to pack for January

  • A warm fleece and a light rain jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • Layers for cool evenings
  • Sunglasses for bright winter days

Our timing tip

Stay in a year-round town like Lagos or Tavira instead of a resort strip, so you have open restaurants every night.

Beat the crowds

  • Take Ponta da Piedade and Benagil boat tours at the first departure of the day for calm water and fewer boats.
  • Swap the busiest central beaches for the Ria Formosa islands or the west coast beaches, which are wilder and far less crowded.
  • If you must go in July or August, book cars, villas, and popular restaurant tables early, and hit the beach by 9am.
  • Stay in towns like Tavira or Lagos rather than high-rise resort strips for more character and quieter evenings outside peak season.

Know before you go

  • Many beach bars, seasonal restaurants, and some hotels in resort areas close from about November to March. Larger towns stay open all year.
  • Boat tours to the caves run much of the year but are frequently cancelled when seas are rough, especially in winter.
  • Lifeguards typically staff major beaches from about June to September only; outside that window, check flags and conditions carefully.
  • Some beaches along the cliffs are closed or restricted because of rockfall risk. Respect signs and do not sit directly below cliffs.
