What July is like in Namibia

July is peak season. Days are dry and mild, with highs near 72F (22C), and dawns inland are frosty. Etosha game viewing is excellent as animals crowd the waterholes. European summer holidays bring the most visitors of the year after August, prices are at their highest, and lodges near Sossusvlei and Etosha fill first.

July suits families on summer break and first-time safari travelers who want top wildlife and comfortable days. Book many months ahead, especially the small lodges in and near the parks. If you want similar conditions with fewer people, go in June or September.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Namibia this month.

01

Etosha waterhole theater

Black rhino, elephant and lion can all visit the same floodlit pool after dark, and you can watch from a bench at the rest camps.

02

Family-friendly safari

Waterhole viewing benches let kids watch wildlife without sitting in a vehicle all day.

03

Cool coastal escape

Foggy Swakopmund and Walvis Bay offer seal and flamingo kayak trips and a break from long drives.

What to pack for July

  • A warm jacket, hat and gloves for frosty dawns
  • A fleece for foggy coastal days
  • Binoculars for every family member
  • Sun protection for bright midday hours

Our timing tip

Drive out of the Etosha rest camps at gate opening and park at a quiet waterhole instead of chasing sightings.

What's on in July

Etosha waterhole season

Roughly July through October, peaking as the dry season ends

As seasonal water dries up, wildlife concentrates at permanent waterholes. The later in the dry season, the better the viewing and the hotter the days.

Fish River Canyon

One of the largest canyons on Earth. The multi-day hike runs only from about late April or May to mid September because of summer heat and flash floods; the viewpoints are open year-round.

The Skeleton Coast

Shipwrecks, fog, and a seal colony of tens of thousands at Cape Cross. Remote, raw, and best combined with Damaraland.

Beat the crowds

  • Book lodges inside or right at the edge of the parks (Sossusvlei and Etosha) first; they sell out months ahead for July and August and buy you the dawn gate advantage.
  • Go in June or September instead of July and August for the same dry-season wildlife with fewer European families on the roads.
  • Avoid the mid December to early January and Easter windows at the coast, when South African and Namibian holidaymakers fill Swakopmund.
  • At Etosha, drive out at gate opening and camp at a quiet waterhole rather than chasing sightings; the animals come to the water, and the crowds come to the famous pools.

Know before you go

  • The Fish River Canyon multi-day hike is open only from roughly late April or May to mid September; the rest of the year it is closed for extreme heat and flash-flood risk.
  • Park gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, and night driving outside the camps is not permitted in Etosha. Plan drives to reach camp before the gate closes.
  • In the rainy season, some gravel roads and river crossings in the north and in Damaraland can flood after storms. Check road conditions daily before long drives.
  • Business and town shops close early on Saturdays and are largely shut on Sundays outside Windhoek and Swakopmund, so stock up on fuel and groceries before weekends.
