What June is like in Munich
June brings long, warm evenings, with highs near 72F (22C) and daylight past 9pm. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in off the Alps, but mornings are usually fine. The beer gardens are packed, the Englischer Garten is full of sunbathers, and the Tollwood summer festival sets up in the Olympic Park late in the month. Crowds and prices are high, though not yet at their summer peak.
It suits families, hikers and anyone who wants Munich at its most sociable. Budget travelers may wince at the rates, and Corpus Christi (a public holiday, usually in June) closes shops for a day. If you want the same weather for a bit less, try May or early September.
Make the most of June
What is especially good about Munich this month.
Tollwood Summer Festival
Music, theater and food stalls fill the Olympic Park from late June, a relaxed evening out for all ages.
Foothill hiking
Trails in the Bavarian foothills are mostly snow-free and the cable cars are running, so a day near Garmisch-Partenkirchen is easy.
Evenings at the Eisbach
The river surfers are out until late, and the long light makes the walk up to the Chinese Tower beer garden a perfect after-dinner loop.
Corpus Christi processions
On the holiday, usually in June, traditional processions wind through the old town and Bavarian villages.
What to pack for June
- A packable rain shell for afternoon storms
- A light sweater for late evenings outside
- Hiking shoes if you are heading into the foothills
- A picnic blanket for the Englischer Garten
- Sunscreen and a hat
Our timing tip
Do outdoor sightseeing and hikes in the morning, because summer thunderstorms usually build in the afternoon.

Things to do in Munich
Englischer Garten
Bigger than Central Park. Watch the Eisbach river surfers at the park's southern edge, then walk to the Chinese Tower beer garden.
Munich Residenz
The Antiquarium hall and the Treasury are the highlights. A rainy-day half day.
Deutsches Museum
Enormous; pick three sections and stop. Weekday mornings avoid school groups less than you would hope.
Pinakotheken
The Alte Pinakothek's Durer and Rubens rooms are the highlight. Sunday admission is heavily discounted, so crowds rise.
Nymphenburg Palace
Summer palace with a huge park and the royal carriage museum. The park is free.
Neuschwanstein Castle
About two hours away. Timed tickets are required and sell out weeks ahead in summer; book online.
Beat the crowds
- For Oktoberfest, go on a weekday before noon and you can usually walk into a tent. Weekend evenings need a reservation made months ahead.
- Book Neuschwanstein tickets online as soon as your date is fixed in summer, and take an early train to Fussen.
- Hotel rates during Oktoberfest and major trade fairs can triple. If you are flexible, check both before picking dates.
- Visit the Residenz and the Pinakotheken on weekdays; Sunday discounted entry fills them with locals.
Know before you go
- Bavaria has more public holidays than most of Germany (Epiphany, Ascension, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, Assumption Day on August 15, All Saints). Shops close, and many sights run holiday hours.
- Sunday shopping is largely closed by law. Museums and beer gardens stay open.
- Many museums close one day a week, often Monday. The Deutsches Museum is an exception most of the year.
- Beer gardens are weather-dependent: they typically open from spring through early fall and close on cold or rainy days.
