What July is like in Hong Kong

July is a month to avoid if you can. Highs are near 88F (31C), the humidity is heavy, and typhoon season is in force. Outdoors feels like a sauna, while every mall, museum and MTR car is chilled by strong air-conditioning. School holidays add families to the crowds. A Typhoon Signal 8 can shut attractions, ferries and most buses for a day or more.

If school holidays force July, plan outdoor time before 10am and build afternoons around museums. Happy Valley racing pauses from around mid month. Hikers and anyone who struggles with heat should pick another month. For comfortable weather, aim for late October, November or December.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Hong Kong this month.

01

Beach mornings

Lifeguarded beaches like Repulse Bay and Shek O are the best way to handle the heat, early in the day.

02

Ocean Park's aquarium

The indoor aquarium is a cool, easy win for kids on steamy days.

03

Last races of the season

Happy Valley's Wednesday night racing runs until about mid July, then pauses for the summer.

What to pack for July

  • The lightest, most breathable clothes you own
  • A sweater for freezing air-conditioning
  • A compact umbrella for sun and storms
  • High-SPF sunscreen and a hat
  • Swimwear for beach mornings

Our timing tip

Buy flexible or refundable tickets for ferries and island trips, since a typhoon signal can cancel them at short notice.

Beat the crowds

  • Avoid the mainland Golden Week holidays (roughly May 1 to 5 and October 1 to 7): Tsim Sha Tsui, the Peak, and Disneyland are at their most crowded.
  • Take the Peak up on a weekday right after opening, or walk up the Old Peak Road, and skip the tram queue entirely.
  • Do the big hikes on weekdays. Weekend trailheads on the Dragon's Back and Lion Rock have lines for the bus and the photo spots.
  • Dim sum halls are calmest right when they open (often 7am to 9am) and slammed at weekend lunch. Go early and eat like a local.

Know before you go

  • Chinese New Year: the first two to three days close many independent restaurants, market stalls, and small shops. Malls, hotels, and major attractions mostly stay open.
  • Typhoon Signal 8 or higher and Black Rainstorm warnings close offices and many attractions, suspend ferries and most buses, and cancel the Ngong Ping cable car. The underground MTR usually keeps running.
  • Ngong Ping 360 runs periodic maintenance closures and suspends in high wind; check before you trek out to Lantau.
  • Happy Valley and Sha Tin racing pause in the summer off-season, roughly mid July to early September.
