What November is like in Finnish Lapland

November is Lapland's gray gap. Highs sit near 25F (-4C), days are dark and short, and snow is often not deep enough for sledding or safaris. Many activities are not yet running. Aurora is still possible on clear nights, but cloudy weather is common. Prices are lower than December, but many hotels and restaurants run limited service. Santa Claus Village stays open, and Christmas programs start at some lodges late in the month.

Most travelers should pick another month. If you want Christmas cheer, come in December; for snow and daylight, March is far better.

Make the most of November

What is especially good about Finnish Lapland this month.

01

Santa Claus Village before the rush

The village is open every day, and November visits come without the December lines.

02

Aurora on clear nights

When the clouds break, the long dark nights give plenty of viewing time.

03

Low prices before Christmas

Rooms are cheaper than in December, if you do not need snow activities.

What to pack for November

  • A warm winter coat
  • Insulated boots
  • Hat, gloves, and a scarf
  • A headlamp for dark afternoons

Our timing tip

If you come in November, wait for the last week, when snow is more likely and some Christmas programs begin.

Beat the crowds

  • For a winter trip, aim for March instead of December or February school holidays: better light, lower prices, and still excellent snow.
  • Stay outside Rovaniemi, for example in Saariselka, Levi, Yllas, or Inari, for darker skies and fewer tour buses.
  • Book safaris, glass cabins, and flights for December months ahead; prices and demand peak around Christmas.
  • Summer and September hiking trails are uncrowded almost everywhere; the national park huts rarely feel busy outside holiday weeks.

Know before you go

  • May and early June (the melt season) and October to November (before snow) are gaps: many safaris, hotels, and restaurants close or run limited service.
  • Snow-dependent activities like husky and snowmobile safaris usually run from December to April. In some years, early December snow can be thin.
  • Around Christmas, restaurants and activities can be booked out; confirm Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dining in advance.
  • Some ski lifts and resort services close in late April or May, depending on snow.
