What May is like in Copenhagen

May is a smart month for Copenhagen. Highs reach about 61F (16C), the evenings stretch past 9pm, and outdoor cafe season begins along the canals and in the squares. Tivoli is open, the parks are green, and prices sit below the summer peak. Nights can still be cool, and the harbor is too cold for most swimmers.

It suits nearly everyone: couples, families, first-timers and anyone who wants long days without summer crowds. The only people who might wait are those set on harbor swimming, Midsummer bonfires or the summer festivals, which arrive in June and July.

Make the most of May

What is especially good about Copenhagen this month.

01

Outdoor cafe season

Tables spill onto the sidewalks, and eating outside in the evening light becomes the thing to do.

02

The King's Garden

The park around Rosenborg Castle fills with picnickers on warm days, and the castle is less busy than in summer.

03

Louisiana's sculpture garden

The coastal museum north of the city is at its best once the lawns are green and the weather is mild enough to linger outside.

What to pack for May

  • A light jacket for cool evenings
  • A sweater or fleece
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunglasses for the long bright days

Our timing tip

Book Rosenborg Castle timed tickets ahead for a morning slot, then walk to Nyhavn for photos before the lunch crowd arrives.

Vikings, Bronze Age treasures, and Danish history in one building. A strong rainy-day choice.

Danish Golden Age painting and a strong modern collection. Evening openings on some weekdays.

05

Nyhavn

The painted 17th-century harbor front. Photograph it at 8am, then eat elsewhere; the canal-side restaurants are overpriced.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Forty minutes north by train, on the coast. The sculpture garden and sea views make it a summer half day.

Beat the crowds

  • Visit Nyhavn and the Little Mermaid before 9am in summer. Cruise groups arrive mid morning.
  • Rent a bike and head to Norrebro, Vesterbro, or the harbor districts instead of staying in the strip between Stroget and Nyhavn.
  • Book popular restaurants and Rosenborg tickets ahead in July and August. Much of the rest of the city works as walk-in.
  • For lower prices with summer weather, aim for early June or early September rather than July.

Know before you go

  • Tivoli is seasonal: a summer season from around April to September, a Halloween season in October, and a Christmas season from mid November to early January. It is closed in between, including most of late winter.
  • July is Denmark's main vacation month, and some independent restaurants and shops close for two to three weeks.
  • Many museums close on Mondays. Check before planning around them.
  • Harbor baths and beach life are summer only, roughly June to August, with daring locals swimming into September.
