What July is like in Banff

July is Banff's peak. Highs reach about 72F (22C), afternoon thunderstorms roll through, and everything is open, from the lakes to most hiking trails. The lakes are at their most vivid color. It is also the most crowded and expensive month. Lake Louise parking can fill before 7am, and the Calgary Stampede, about 90 minutes away, adds even more visitors.

This month suits families on summer break and hikers who want the warmest weather. It is a poor pick for anyone who dislikes crowds or last-minute planning. If you can be flexible, the second half of September brings golden larches and fewer people.

Make the most of July

What is especially good about Banff this month.

01

Canoeing on the lakes

A canoe on Lake Louise or Moraine Lake is a classic summer experience. Rentals are expensive and sell out, so go early.

02

The Lake Agnes Tea House hike

Climb from Lake Louise to the tea house for a quieter view and a cup of tea. Start early to beat the crowds.

03

Calgary Stampede

The ten-day rodeo and exhibition in Calgary runs in early to mid July. Pair it with a Banff trip, but book both early.

04

The Icefields Parkway

Summer is the easiest time to drive this road past glaciers and turquoise lakes like Bow Lake and Peyto Lake.

What to pack for July

  • A rain jacket for afternoon storms
  • Layers for cool mornings and warm afternoons
  • Hiking boots and a daypack
  • Bear spray and sunscreen

Our timing tip

Be at Lake Louise before 8am or after 6pm, and book lodging and shuttle seats months in advance.

Johnston Canyon

Catwalks bolted to the canyon wall lead to the Lower and Upper Falls. In winter, guided ice walks visit the frozen falls.

Beat the crowds

  • Reserve Parks Canada shuttle seats the day reservations open in spring; a share of seats is also released two days before departure, which rescues flexible travelers.
  • Be at Lake Louise before 8am or after 6pm in summer. The midday lakeshore is a crowd; the evening light is better anyway.
  • Stay in Canmore, 20 minutes east and outside the park, for more lodging choice, lower prices, and easier parking than Banff town.
  • Swap the headline lakes for equally good ones: Bow Lake, Lake Minnewanka, and Emerald Lake over in Yoho take far less planning.

Know before you go

  • Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. It is open to shuttles and permitted operators roughly June to mid October, then closes for winter entirely. Check Parks Canada's current season dates before planning.
  • Parks Canada shuttles to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake run roughly mid May to mid October and require reservations. Lake Louise lakeshore parking is paid May to October and usually full by early morning in summer.
  • The lakes are typically frozen from November to late May or early June. A May trip will not deliver the turquoise photos, whatever the calendar says.
  • Many high trails hold snow into July, and some trails carry seasonal restrictions for bear activity. Check trail reports before committing to a hike.
