What January is like in Acadia

January in Acadia is true Maine winter. Highs sit near 31F (-1C), with snow, ice and sharp wind off the ocean. Most of the Park Loop Road is closed to cars, and most of Bar Harbor is shut for the season. You will see very few people, and the few places that stay open are cheap. The payoff is silence and a frozen, sparkling coast.

January suits cross-country skiers, snowshoers and hardy travelers who want solitude on their own terms. It is not a good fit for families who need restaurants and easy activities. For the classic Acadia trip with open roads and warm days, come in September or early October.

Make the most of January

What is especially good about Acadia this month.

01

Skiing the carriage roads

With enough snow, the car-free carriage roads become quiet cross-country ski and snowshoe routes past stone bridges.

02

First sunrise in the country

From early October to early March, Cadillac Mountain catches the first sunrise in the United States. In winter you must hike or ski up, since the summit road is closed.

03

A frozen coastline

Ice builds on the granite along the shore, and the winter light on the sea can be beautiful on a clear day.

What to pack for January

  • Insulated, waterproof boots with good tread
  • Traction devices for icy trails and rocks
  • A windproof shell, down jacket, hat and mittens
  • Snacks and a thermos, since food options are scarce

Our timing tip

Book lodging that is open year-round before you go, and check snow conditions on the carriage roads the morning you head out.

Beat the crowds

  • Take the free Island Explorer bus in season instead of hunting for parking at Jordan Pond, Sand Beach, or trailheads.
  • Book Cadillac Summit Road reservations as soon as they are released for your dates; sunrise slots go first.
  • Explore the Quiet Side around Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor, or the Schoodic Peninsula, when Bar Harbor is crowded.
  • Visit midweek in late September for crisp weather, open businesses, and far fewer people than the October foliage weekends.

Know before you go

  • Most of the Park Loop Road and the Cadillac Summit Road close to vehicles from December 1 to April 14; short sections stay open for winter access.
  • A vehicle reservation is required to drive the Cadillac Summit Road from late May to late October. Reservations are sold online, not at the park.
  • Bar Harbor and the island's restaurants, shops, and inns are largely seasonal, with many opening in May and closing after Columbus Day in October.
  • The Island Explorer free bus system runs seasonally, typically from late June into mid October. Check the current schedule.
