The straight answer

The best time to visit Acadia National Park is September through mid October, when the summer crowds thin, the weather is crisp and clear, and fall color peaks around early to mid October; July and August are warmer but the most crowded.

Go September through mid October. After Labor Day, family crowds leave Mount Desert Island, the fog of early summer gives way to clear, crisp days, and the hardwoods around Jordan Pond and the carriage roads turn red and gold, usually peaking around the first half of October. It is the park at its most beautiful, and Bar Harbor is still fully open.

July and August are the peak: warm days in the 70s F (about 21C to 26C), every shop and restaurant open, the free Island Explorer buses running, and the Park Loop Road busy from morning to night. Late May and June are quieter but can be foggy and cool, and blackflies and mosquitoes are at their worst in the woods early in the season.

Winter is a different place. The Park Loop Road and the Cadillac Summit Road close to vehicles from December 1 through mid April, most Bar Harbor businesses shut for the season, and the park becomes a quiet world for cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Driving to the summit of Cadillac Mountain also requires a vehicle reservation from late May to late October, so plan that sunrise ahead.

Why go to Acadia

The highest point on the Atlantic coast

Cadillac Mountain, at 1,530 feet, is the tallest peak on the US Atlantic seaboard, and from early October to early March it catches the first sunrise in the United States.

The carriage roads

Forty-five miles of broken-stone carriage roads and stone bridges, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr., are closed to cars and perfect for walking and biking.

Granite meets the Atlantic

Pink granite cliffs, crashing surf at Thunder Hole, and cobble beaches give Acadia a coastline unlike anything else in the national park system.

Lobster and small towns

Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Southwest Harbor add lobster pounds, harbors, and a classic Maine summer around the park.

Things to do, and when to do them

Beat the crowds

  • Take the free Island Explorer bus in season instead of hunting for parking at Jordan Pond, Sand Beach, or trailheads.
  • Book Cadillac Summit Road reservations as soon as they are released for your dates; sunrise slots go first.
  • Explore the Quiet Side around Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor, or the Schoodic Peninsula, when Bar Harbor is crowded.
  • Visit midweek in late September for crisp weather, open businesses, and far fewer people than the October foliage weekends.
  • Check the Bar Harbor cruise ship schedule; big ship days bring waves of visitors into town and the park.

Open or closed

  • Most of the Park Loop Road and the Cadillac Summit Road close to vehicles from December 1 to April 14; short sections stay open for winter access.
  • A vehicle reservation is required to drive the Cadillac Summit Road from late May to late October. Reservations are sold online, not at the park.
  • Bar Harbor and the island's restaurants, shops, and inns are largely seasonal, with many opening in May and closing after Columbus Day in October.
  • The Island Explorer free bus system runs seasonally, typically from late June into mid October. Check the current schedule.
  • Carriage roads can close temporarily during the spring thaw and other wet periods to protect the surfaces.

With kids in tow

  • Kids love Sand Beach (with very cold water), Thunder Hole at mid to high tide, and the tide pools at Ship Harbor and Wonderland.
  • The carriage roads are ideal for family biking: no cars, gentle grades, and stone bridges to discover.
  • Skip the Beehive and Precipice with young children; iron rungs and exposure make them adults-and-teens-only climbs.
  • For homeschool families, September weekdays offer open facilities, thin crowds, and lessons in tides, geology, and the granite coast.

Getting there

  • Bangor International (BGR) is about an hour and fifteen minutes from Bar Harbor; Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) has small-plane service from Boston.
  • Portland (PWM) is about three hours by car and Boston about five, with most of the drive on Interstate 95 and US Route 1.
  • From Texas, connect through Boston, New York, Washington, or Charlotte to Bangor or Portland.
