The straight answer
The best time to visit Abu Dhabi is November through March, when highs run from the mid 70s to mid 80s F (24C to 30C) and beaches, desert trips, and outdoor sights are comfortable.
Go from November through March. These are the months when Abu Dhabi is at its best outdoors: beach days on Saadiyat, kayaking in the Mangrove National Park, evening walks on the Corniche, and camping in the dunes of Liwa at the edge of the Empty Quarter. Late November or early December usually brings the Formula 1 season finale at Yas Marina Circuit, which pushes hotel prices to the year's peak.
From May through September, the heat is extreme. Highs regularly pass 104F (40C), and humidity on the coast makes it feel worse. The city adapts by moving indoors: Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan, and the Yas Island theme parks are all climate controlled, and summer hotel rates drop sharply. If you only care about museums, malls, and theme parks, summer is a real value play; for anything outdoors, it is not.
Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier each year. The city stays open and most restaurants now serve through the day, but the rhythm slows until sunset, when iftar gatherings and late evenings take over. The Eid holidays that follow bring regional visitors and busy hotels. Here is the month-by-month picture.

Why go to Abu Dhabi
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
One of the largest mosques in the world, with white marble domes, a vast hand-knotted carpet, and reflecting pools. Visiting is free.
Culture on Saadiyat Island
Louvre Abu Dhabi under its famous lattice dome anchors a growing cultural district, with more major museums under development nearby.
Theme parks under one roof
Yas Island packs Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi into one area, all well suited to hot days.
Real desert, close by
The Liwa Oasis and the Empty Quarter's towering dunes are a few hours' drive, and Al Ain's UNESCO-listed oases and Jebel Hafeet are closer still.
Things to do, and when to do them
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Free entry with online booking. Go at sunset for the changing light on the marble; closed to visitors on Friday mornings.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Art spanning world history under a dome that filters light like palm fronds. Weekday mornings are quietest.
Qasr Al Watan
The working presidential palace, open to visitors, with a nightly light and sound show.
Yas Island theme parks
Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld are indoors; Yas Waterworld is outdoors and best from October to April.
Mangrove National Park
Kayak through the mangroves at high tide in the cooler months, with herons and crabs close at hand.
Liwa Oasis and the Empty Quarter
Some of the tallest dunes on Earth, including Moreeb Dune. Go in winter; summer is dangerous in the desert.
Al Ain
The UAE's garden city, with UNESCO-listed oases, forts, and the drive up Jebel Hafeet. A good day trip in winter.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Late November or early December, usually the Formula 1 season finale
Night racing at Yas Marina Circuit with big concerts. Hotel prices spike across the city; book early.
UAE National Day
December 2 every year
Fireworks, parades, and decorated cars across the emirate, and a long weekend that fills hotels.
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr
Shifts about 11 days earlier each year; check the current dates
The city stays open with a slower daytime pace, then comes alive after sunset. Eid brings regional crowds and busy hotels.
Abu Dhabi Festival
Early spring, usually February into March, varies by year
A major classical music and arts festival with international performers.
Al Dhafra Festival
Winter, roughly December into January, varies by year
Camel beauty contests, falconry, and traditional crafts in the Western Region desert.
Liwa Date Festival
Summer, usually July, varies by year
A celebration of the date harvest in the Liwa Oasis, with competitions for the best fruit.
Beat the crowds
- Visit the Grand Mosque at opening or on a weekday evening rather than on weekend afternoons, when tour groups peak.
- Avoid Grand Prix week unless you are going for the race; the whole city's hotel inventory prices up.
- Early November and March deliver peak-season weather with slightly lower demand than December and January.
- Book Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan for weekday mornings to see them at their quietest.
Open or closed
- The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is closed to visitors on Friday mornings for prayers, and reopens in the afternoon.
- During Ramadan, most restaurants now serve through the day, but live entertainment can pause and hours shift. Be respectful about eating and drinking in public during daylight.
- In summer, outdoor attractions like Yas Waterworld, desert safaris, and kayak tours run reduced schedules, and midday outdoor activity is genuinely dangerous.
- Most museums and attractions stay open all year. Check hours for Mondays, when some cultural sites close.
With kids in tow
- Yas Island is built for families, with four major theme parks and hotels linked by shuttles. Summer deals can make it affordable.
- The Grand Mosque requires modest dress for all visitors, including children above a certain age. Abayas are provided for women.
- Saadiyat and Corniche beaches are calm, clean, and good for kids in the cooler months.
- For homeschool families, Louvre Abu Dhabi presents world art as one connected story across cultures, which makes it an unusually good teaching museum.
Getting there
- Zayed International Airport (AUH) is the gateway. Etihad flies nonstop from several US cities, including New York, Chicago, Washington, and Boston.
- Abu Dhabi has US Customs and Border Protection preclearance, so US-bound travelers clear immigration before departure.
- Dubai International Airport is about 90 minutes away by road, which opens up more flight options from Texas and elsewhere.
- US citizens currently receive a visa on arrival for short stays. Check current rules before travel.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
