The straight answer

The best time to visit Uzbekistan is mid April through May or mid September through October: warm, dry days for Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva without the 100F (38C) heat of midsummer.

Go from mid April through May, or mid September through October. These are the months when the tiled domes of Samarkand, the lanes of Bukhara, and the walled city of Khiva are warm and sunny but not scorching, and when you can walk from madrasa to caravanserai all day in comfort. Fall adds harvest season, with melons, grapes, and pomegranates piled high in the bazaars.

Summer is the trap. Bukhara and Khiva sit on the edge of the Kyzylkum Desert, and from late June through August highs routinely pass 100F (38C). Sightseeing becomes a dawn and dusk affair, with long afternoons hiding from the heat. Winter swings the other way: cold, sometimes snowy, and very quiet, with some hotels and guesthouses closing in Khiva and prices at their lowest.

Navruz, the Persian new year on March 21, marks the start of spring with feasts and celebrations, and is the best festival reason to go early. Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier each year and has little effect on visitors in this largely secular country. Here is the month-by-month picture.

Why go to Uzbekistan

The Registan and beyond

Samarkand's Registan, three madrasas facing a single square, is one of the great architectural ensembles of the Islamic world, with Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-e-Amir close behind.

Three living Silk Road cities

Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva each have UNESCO-listed old towns, and each feels different: Samarkand grand, Bukhara lived-in, Khiva a walled museum city.

Fast, easy trains

Afrosiyob high-speed trains link Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara, making a multi-city trip simple without internal flights.

Warm hospitality and good value

Family-run guesthouses, plov cooked in giant cauldrons, and prices well below Western Europe or Turkey.

Things to do, and when to do them

01

Registan, Samarkand

See it at sunrise and again after dark when it is lit up. Midday in summer is brutal on the open square.

Melon and harvest season

Late summer through fall, roughly August to October

Uzbek melons are famous across Central Asia, and bazaars overflow with grapes, figs, and pomegranates.

Beat the crowds

  • Aim for late April or early to mid October, when weather is ideal and tour groups are slightly fewer than in the peak weeks of May and September.
  • Stay overnight in Khiva and Bukhara so you can walk the old towns at dawn and after dark, when day-trippers have left.
  • Visit the Registan at opening time or late in the day, and return after dark for the lighting.
  • Book Afrosiyob high-speed train tickets as early as sales open, as they sell out in peak months.

Open or closed

  • In winter, some guesthouses and small hotels in Khiva and rural areas close, and restaurant choices narrow. Major hotels and monuments stay open.
  • In summer heat, monuments are open, but walking between them from late morning to late afternoon is exhausting; plan a midday break.
  • Around Navruz and Independence Day, domestic travel increases and trains fill; book early.
  • Ramadan has little impact for visitors in Uzbekistan; restaurants and cafes generally stay open.

With kids in tow

  • The walled city of Khiva is compact and car-free inside, and feels like a real-life fairy tale to children.
  • Summer heat is dangerous for small children in Bukhara and Khiva. Spring and fall are far better for families.
  • The high-speed trains are comfortable and easy with kids, and the ride between Tashkent and Samarkand is about two hours.
  • For homeschool families, the Silk Road cities connect directly to the history of trade, Islam, astronomy (Ulugh Beg's observatory in Samarkand), and Tamerlane's empire.

Getting there

  • Tashkent International Airport (TAS) is the main gateway; Samarkand also receives international flights. There are no regular nonstops from the US.
  • Most Americans connect through Istanbul, Dubai, or a European hub. From Texas, routings via Istanbul or the Gulf are usually fastest.
  • US citizens can currently visit Uzbekistan visa-free for short stays. Check the latest entry rules before booking.
