The straight answer
The best time to visit Savannah is March through April or October through November: azaleas in spring, mild fall days, and comfortable walking weather through the squares.
Go in March and April, or in October and November. Spring is Savannah's showpiece: azaleas and dogwoods burst through the 22 squares and Forsyth Park, and the Savannah Music Festival runs in late March into April. Fall is quieter and just as comfortable, with the SCAD Savannah Film Festival and mild days perfect for walking.
The one catch in spring is St. Patrick's Day. Savannah throws one of the largest St. Patrick's celebrations in the country, the city fills to bursting, and hotel rates spike for that week. Plan around it or plan for it.
Summer is hot and heavy: highs in the low 90s F (about 33C), thick humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and biting sand gnats near the marshes. Hurricane season runs June through November. Winter is mild and the cheapest time to come, with highs around 60F (16C) and quiet streets.

Why go to Savannah
One of the most admired city plans in America
James Oglethorpe's 1733 grid of squares is still intact. Each square is a small park, and walking from one to the next is the whole point.
Forsyth Park and the live oaks
Moss-draped oaks, the famous fountain, and a Saturday farmers market make the park the city's living room.
Beach and marsh nearby
Tybee Island is 30 minutes away, and the salt marshes and barrier islands make for great kayaking and birding.
Walkable and relaxed
Savannah is compact, slow, and easy. It is one of the best short-trip cities in the South.
Things to do, and when to do them
The squares and Forsyth Park
Walk the historic district early in the morning. Chippewa, Monterey, and Lafayette squares are standouts.
Bonaventure Cemetery
Moss-draped Victorian cemetery on a river bluff. Go in the morning light and respect posted hours.
Fort Pulaski National Monument
A massive brick fort near Tybee, with trails and ranger programs. Easy half day.
Tybee Island
Beach town with a historic lighthouse. Summer weekends are busy; weekdays are easier.
Wormsloe State Historic Site
Famous oak-lined avenue and colonial ruins. The live oak drive is best in morning light.
Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
Birthplace of the founder of the Girl Scouts. Tours fill with troops in spring.
River Street
Cobblestones, ships, and old cotton warehouses. Busiest in the evening and on weekends.
Events and seasons worth planning around
St. Patrick's Day celebration
Around March 17 each year
One of the biggest St. Patrick's parades in the US. The city fills, rates spike, and River Street becomes a street party.
Savannah Music Festival
Late March into April
Jazz, classical, roots, and world music in historic venues. Tickets sell out for popular shows.
SCAD Savannah Film Festival
Late October into early November
A major regional film festival with screenings and guests.
Beat the crowds
- Avoid St. Patrick's week unless you are coming for it. The weeks around it offer the same blooms with far fewer people.
- Stay in the Victorian District or near Forsyth Park rather than River Street for quieter nights.
- Take the walking tours and cemetery visits early, and save the afternoons for museums in summer.
- Weekday trips in spring and fall are much calmer than weekends.
Open or closed
- Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Storms can close Tybee Island and prompt evacuations.
- Sand gnats (no-see-ums) are worst in spring and summer near marshes. Bring repellent.
- Historic houses and museums keep limited hours on holidays; check before planning around one.
With kids in tow
- Fort Pulaski, the Tybee lighthouse, and the Girl Scouts birthplace are strong kid picks. Trolley tours help little legs.
- Kayak and dolphin-watching tours from Tybee are great for kids in spring and fall.
- For homeschool families: colonial Georgia, the Civil War at Fort Pulaski, and the Girl Scouts story make a varied history trip.
Getting there
- Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) has nonstops from many US hubs; from Austin, most routes connect through Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, or Houston.
- Charleston is about 2 hours north by car.
- The historic district is walkable; you only need a car for Tybee, Wormsloe, and Fort Pulaski.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
