The straight answer
The best time to visit Charleston, South Carolina is late March through May or October through early November: warm, walkable days, gardens in bloom or fall light, and none of the sticky summer heat.
Go in spring or fall. From late March through May, azaleas and wisteria cover the old gardens and plantations, the Festival of Houses and Gardens opens private homes, and Spoleto Festival USA fills the city with performances at the end of May. October and early November are nearly as good, with lower humidity, warm water still at the beaches, and the hurricane season winding down.
Summer is hot, humid, and stormy. From June through September, highs sit near 90F (32C) with heavy humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, and the Atlantic hurricane season peaks from mid August into October. The beaches are at their best and hotel rates ease a little, but walking the historic district at midday is exhausting.
Winter is the quiet value season. Highs around 60F (16C), mostly open attractions, and the lowest prices of the year. It will not be beach weather, but Charleston's real draw is its streets, food, and history, and all of those work in January.

Why go to Charleston
One of the best-preserved historic cities in the US
Rainbow Row, the Battery, church steeples, and blocks of 18th and 19th century homes make the peninsula a walking museum.
A serious food city
Lowcountry cooking, shrimp and grits, oysters, and a restaurant scene that punches far above the city's size.
Beaches minutes away
Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, and Isle of Palms are all within about 30 minutes of downtown.
Deep, hard history
Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began, and plantation sites that now tell the story of the enslaved people who built them.
Things to do, and when to do them
Fort Sumter
Reach it only by the official ferry from Liberty Square or Patriots Point. Book ahead in spring.
The historic district, Battery, and Rainbow Row
Walk early in the morning in summer. The side streets south of Broad are the quietest.
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens
One of the oldest public gardens in the US. Azaleas peak in late March and April.
Drayton Hall
A rare unrestored 18th century plantation house, with strong interpretation of the enslaved community.
Patriots Point
The aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and a Fort Sumter ferry stop in Mount Pleasant. Great with kids.
Middleton Place
Formal terraced gardens along the Ashley River, with a working stableyard. Best in spring.
The beaches
Folly Beach for surf and energy, Sullivan's Island for a quiet day. Summer weekends are packed; go on weekdays.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
A weekend in mid February
Wildlife art, dog shows, and demonstrations across downtown.
Charleston Wine + Food
Early March
The city's big culinary festival. Tickets and hotels sell out.
Festival of Houses and Gardens
Mid March through mid April
Tours of private historic homes and gardens run by the Historic Charleston Foundation.
Spoleto Festival USA
Late May into early June, about 17 days
Opera, theater, dance, and music across the city. One of the most important arts festivals in the US.
Holiday Festival of Lights
Mid November through early January
A drive-through lights show at James Island County Park. Great with kids.
Beat the crowds
- Visit Fort Sumter on the first ferry of the day, and do the historic district walk before 10am.
- Stay in North Central or on the upper peninsula instead of the South of Broad core. Rates are lower and you are a short ride away.
- Book Wine + Food and Spoleto hotels months ahead; a weekday trip between the two in April offers the same blooms with lighter crowds.
- Weekdays at the beaches are dramatically calmer than weekends in summer.
Open or closed
- Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, peaking from mid August into October. Named storms can close attractions and trigger evacuations.
- Many plantation and garden sites have limited hours on major holidays; check before Thanksgiving and Christmas visits.
- King tides and heavy rain can flood low-lying downtown streets for hours. Check local alerts during storms.
- Beach lifeguard coverage and some beach-town businesses reduce hours outside the summer season.
With kids in tow
- Patriots Point, the South Carolina Aquarium, the Fort Sumter ferry, and a beach day make a great kid itinerary.
- Horse-drawn carriage tours pause when temperatures climb too high in summer, so plan them for spring, fall, or early morning.
- For homeschool families: Fort Sumter, the Old Slave Mart Museum, and Drayton Hall give a candid, layered look at American and Civil War history.
Getting there
- Charleston International (CHS) has nonstops from many major US hubs. From Austin, most routes connect through Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, or Houston.
- Savannah is about 2 hours south by car, making a two-city Lowcountry trip easy.
- The historic district is walkable; you will want a car or rideshare for plantations and beaches.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
