What April is like in Okinawa

April is one of Okinawa's best months. Sunny and warm, with highs near 76F (24C) and the sea near 75F (24C). It is before the rains and before the heat, and most beaches are open. At the end of the month, Golden Week pushes prices up as Japanese holidaymakers arrive.

This month suits families, beach lovers, snorkelers, and couples. It is a great time for island-hopping to the Keramas or Ishigaki. Book around Golden Week, or avoid it, since flights and hotels fill with domestic travelers. If April is not possible, October is the other best month.

Make the most of April

What is especially good about Okinawa this month.

01

Beach days before the rains

The water is warm enough for snorkeling and the weather is steady. Netted beaches are safe for kids.

02

Kerama snorkeling

Zamami and Tokashiki have some of Japan's clearest water. Take a ferry for a day or stay overnight.

03

Ishigaki and the Yaeyamas

A short flight gets you to Kabira Bay, Taketomi's water buffalo carts, and Iriomote's mangroves.

What to pack for April

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • A rash guard for snorkeling
  • Water shoes
  • A light rain jacket

Beat the crowds

  • Avoid Golden Week (roughly April 29 to May 5) and mid July through August, when Japanese families flood the resorts.
  • Visit Churaumi Aquarium right at opening or in the last two hours of the day; midday is packed with tour buses.
  • Book Kerama day trips for early in your stay so you have backup days if rough seas cancel ferries.
  • October is the smart-money month: summer water temperatures with a fraction of the crowds and prices.

Know before you go

  • Typhoons shut ferries, cancel flights, and close beaches and some attractions for one to three days. Travel insurance and flexible bookings are worth it from June to October.
  • Most beaches are officially open with lifeguards and jellyfish nets from roughly late March or April to October. Swimming outside netted areas in summer carries box jellyfish risk.
  • Shurijo Castle's main hall has been under reconstruction since the 2019 fire, with parts of the site fenced off during the work; check current access.
  • New Year and Obon bring some closures of small shops and restaurants, though resorts and major sights stay open.
