What September is like in Key West

September is the riskiest month to visit Key West. It sits at the peak of hurricane season, and a storm can close the Overseas Highway and force the Keys to evacuate. Highs are near 89F (32C), the air is heavy, and storms roll in most afternoons. Some small restaurants and shops close for a few weeks. It is also the cheapest and quietest month of the year.

This month is not a good fit for most travelers, especially families with fixed dates. Only very flexible visitors with refundable bookings and good insurance should consider it. For a safer trip at fair prices, wait for November, or go back to May.

Make the most of September

What is especially good about Key West this month.

01

Rock-bottom prices

Rates hit their lowest point of the year, so if the weather holds, you get a lot of island for your money.

02

Locals' Key West

With visitors gone, the island feels like a small town again, and the businesses that stay open are relaxed.

03

Warm, quiet water

Between storms, the reef is warm and uncrowded. Stay flexible and go out when the forecast is calm.

What to pack for September

  • A sturdy rain jacket
  • Light, quick-dry clothes
  • Insect repellent
  • A printed list of your bookings and insurance numbers in case of an evacuation

Our timing tip

If you do come, book only refundable rooms and flights, and check that the restaurants and tours you want are open that week.

Beat the crowds

  • Book Dry Tortugas ferry seats and Old Town hotels months ahead for January through April.
  • Come in late April or May for dry-season weather with lower rates.
  • Walk Duval Street in the morning; it gets rowdy at night, especially during spring break and Fantasy Fest.
  • Cruise ship days crowd Old Town midday. Check the cruise schedule and plan museums for early morning.

Know before you go

  • Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, peaking August through October. Storms can close the Overseas Highway and prompt evacuations of the Keys.
  • Some small restaurants and shops close for a few weeks in September.
  • Dry Tortugas ferries can cancel on rough seas, most often in winter cold fronts. Build in a backup day.
