The straight answer
The best time to visit the French Riviera is June or September, when the sea is warm enough to swim, the beach clubs are open, and the crowds and prices sit well below the July and August peak.
Go in June or September. Both months give you beach weather and swimmable water, long evenings, and every beach club, boat, and terrace open, without the traffic jams on the coast road and the peak hotel rates of high summer. May and early October are close runners-up if you care more about walking and museums than swimming.
July and August are the Riviera at maximum: the most sun, the warmest water, and the most people. Nice's pebble beaches fill, Saint-Tropez traffic backs up for miles, and mid August around the Assumption holiday on August 15 is the most crowded and expensive stretch of the year. May has its own spikes, when the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix send rates in those towns sky-high.
Winter is the Riviera's secret. Highs stay in the mid to upper 50s F (around 13C), Nice and Monaco run at full speed, and February brings the Nice Carnival and the Menton Lemon Festival. What closes is the beach scene: most private beach clubs shut from around October to April, and Saint-Tropez goes very quiet.

Why go to the French Riviera
Sea, light, and color
The light and the Mediterranean drew Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, and Renoir, and it still defines the coast from Cannes to Menton.
Art museums in every town
The Matisse and Chagall museums in Nice, Picasso in Antibes, the Fondation Maeght near Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and more in a small area.
Hill villages above the coast
Eze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and Gourdon sit high above the sea with views across to the Alps and down to the water.
Easy movement by train
The coastal rail line connects Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Villefranche, Monaco, and Menton, so you can base in one town and see the others.
Things to do, and when to do them
Old Nice and the Promenade des Anglais
The Cours Saleya market in the morning, then a walk along the seafront. Castle Hill has the classic view over the bay.
Musee Matisse, Nice
In a hilltop villa in Cimiez, with the artist's grave nearby. Much calmer than the seafront on busy days.
Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild
A pink Belle Epoque villa with themed gardens and musical fountains on Cap Ferrat.
Eze village
A medieval hill village with an exotic garden at the top. Go early or late to avoid tour groups.
Oceanographic Museum, Monaco
A grand museum and aquarium built into the cliff above the sea.
Fondation Maeght
Modern art in a garden setting near Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with works by Miro, Giacometti, and Chagall.
Lerins Islands from Cannes
A short ferry to quiet pine woods, clear water, and a monastery island. A good escape from Cannes crowds.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Nice Carnival
Two weeks in February, sometimes into early March
Giant floats, flower parades, and night parades on the Place Massena. One of the world's great carnivals.
Menton Lemon Festival (Fete du Citron)
February into early March
Enormous sculptures built from lemons and oranges, plus parades through the town.
Cannes Film Festival
Mid to late May
Screenings are mostly for accredited guests, but hotel prices across Cannes spike for the full two weeks.
Monaco Grand Prix
Late May or early June
Formula 1 on the streets of Monte Carlo. Hotel prices across the coast jump that weekend.
Nice Jazz Festival and Jazz a Juan
July
Summer jazz festivals in Nice and in Juan-les-Pins near Antibes, one of Europe's oldest.
Bastille Day fireworks
July 14 every year
Fireworks over the bay in Nice and along the coast on France's national day.
Monaco Yacht Show
Late September
The world's superyacht show fills Port Hercule and the hotels of Monaco.
Beat the crowds
- Base yourself in Nice and use the train. It is cheaper than Cannes or Monaco and avoids the summer traffic and parking problem on the coast.
- Check the calendar before booking May: the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix can double hotel rates in those towns.
- Go to the hill villages (Eze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence) before 10am or after 5pm, when tour coaches are gone.
- Swim at smaller coves and public beaches around Villefranche, Cap d'Antibes, and Cap Ferrat rather than the central Nice and Cannes beaches in peak weeks.
Open or closed
- Most private beach clubs operate from about April or May to late September or October, and close for the winter.
- Saint-Tropez is highly seasonal: many shops, hotels, and restaurants close from about November to March.
- Nice, Monaco, Cannes, and Antibes stay fully open all year, with museums and markets running through winter.
- Many Nice city museums close one day a week, often Tuesday. Check before planning a museum day.
- May 1 and August 15 are public holidays when many businesses close or run reduced hours.
With kids in tow
- Nice's beaches are pebbly and shelve quickly. Families with small children often prefer the sandier beaches at Juan-les-Pins, Villefranche, or Menton.
- The Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, the boat to the Lerins Islands, and the little tourist train up to Castle Hill in Nice are strong kid draws.
- The coastal train makes car-free trips easy; kids under four ride free on French regional trains.
- For homeschool families, the Riviera's art museums pair well with a study of modern art, and many are small enough to see in an hour.
Getting there
- Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (NCE) is France's busiest airport outside Paris, with nonstops from the New York area and more service in summer.
- From other US cities, connect through Paris or another European hub. The TGV from Paris to Nice takes about 5.5 to 6 hours.
- Regional trains run along the coast from Cannes to Menton and the Italian border every 15 to 30 minutes at busy times. Driving is slow in summer and parking expensive.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
