What April is like in Bhutan

April is peak spring. Paro highs reach about 66F (19C), with mild days and some afternoon clouds. The Paro Tshechu often falls in April, and the valleys are green and blooming. Jacaranda trees around Punakha Dzong add purple to one of the country's most beautiful buildings. Demand is high, so flights and hotels need early booking if your trip overlaps festival dates.

It suits first-time visitors, families, and anyone who wants festivals and spring color. Plan ahead. If you want fewer people with similar weather, aim for early March or November.

Make the most of April

What is especially good about Bhutan this month.

01

Paro Tshechu

Five days of masked dances often fall in April, ending with a dawn unveiling of a giant thangka. Kids love the clowns called atsaras.

02

Jacaranda at Punakha Dzong

Spring blooms around Punakha Dzong make it even more photogenic.

03

Tiger's Nest in spring

Mild weather makes the steep 2 to 3 hour hike to the cliffside monastery comfortable. Start early.

What to pack for April

  • Light layers and a fleece
  • Hiking shoes
  • A light rain jacket for afternoon clouds
  • Modest festival clothes

Our timing tip

Book flights into Paro as soon as festival dates are published, since seats on the few routes in sell out.

Beat the crowds

  • Visit in November rather than October: the weather is just as clear and demand eases after the Thimphu Tshechu.
  • If you want a festival without the biggest crowds, look at smaller district tshechus rather than Paro or Thimphu. Your tour operator can match one to your dates.
  • Hike Tiger's Nest as early as the trail opens, or pick a weekday outside festival weeks when domestic visitors are fewer.
  • Consider December through February for Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha: cold, clear, and very quiet, with lower hotel demand.

Know before you go

  • Most visitors book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, and a licensed guide is required for most travel beyond Thimphu and Paro. Check current entry rules before booking.
  • Dzongs usually open to visitors only outside office hours on working days and fully on weekends and holidays; some sections stay closed to visitors at all times.
  • Monsoon landslides (June to August) can close sections of the lateral highway for hours or days, especially heading east toward Bumthang.
  • High treks such as the Snowman Trek have short windows, mainly in October, and are often cancelled when passes are snowbound.
