The straight answer
The best time to visit Beijing is mid April through May or September through October, avoiding the October 1 to 7 Golden Week holiday: mild, dry weather and clear skies for the Great Wall.
Go from mid April through May, or in September and October, and step around the first week of October. Spring brings mild days and blossoming parks; fall is the city's finest season, with dry air, the clearest skies of the year, and red and gold leaves on the hills north of the city by late October.
The catch is China's holiday calendar. Golden Week, the National Day holiday that starts on October 1 and runs about a week, sends hundreds of millions of domestic travelers on the move at once, and the Forbidden City, Great Wall, and Tiananmen Square area see the year's heaviest crowds. The early May Labor Day holiday and the Chinese New Year travel rush in late January or February bring similar surges. Plan around those weeks and Beijing's big sights are far more manageable.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet, with most of the year's rain falling in July and August. Winter is cold and dry, with highs around freezing, but it brings the thinnest crowds, cheap hotels, and the odd chance of snow on the Great Wall. Here is how each month really feels.

Why go to Beijing
The imperial core of China
The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace are three of the most important historic sites in Asia, all within one city.
The Great Wall within reach
Restored sections like Mutianyu and wilder stretches like Jinshanling are a day trip from the city, each with a different feel.
Hutong life
The alley neighborhoods around the Drum and Bell Towers and Houhai still hold courtyard homes, tiny restaurants, and a street life that is disappearing elsewhere.
Peking duck and northern food
Roast duck, hand-pulled noodles, jiaozi dumplings, and lamb hot pot suit the cold months especially well.
Things to do, and when to do them
The Forbidden City (Palace Museum)
Tickets are sold online in advance with real-name registration and a daily cap; it is closed most Mondays. Book early for holiday weeks.
Great Wall at Mutianyu or Jinshanling
Mutianyu has a cable car and toboggan; Jinshanling is farther but wilder. Leave early to beat tour buses.
Temple of Heaven
Go in the early morning to see locals practicing tai chi, dancing, and playing cards in the park.
Summer Palace
A vast imperial garden around Kunming Lake. Spring blossoms and fall color are best; winter brings skating on the lake.
Jingshan Park
The short climb gives the classic view straight down over the Forbidden City's golden roofs.
Lama Temple (Yonghegong)
An active Tibetan Buddhist temple with a giant sandalwood Buddha. Busy during Chinese New Year.
Hutongs around Houhai and the Drum Tower
Explore by bicycle or on foot; best in spring and fall when locals are out on the street.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Chinese New Year and temple fairs
Late January to mid February, varies by lunar calendar
Temple fairs at Ditan Park and other parks bring food stalls, performances, and crowds. Travel into and out of Beijing is at its hardest around this holiday.
Lantern Festival
Fifteen days after Chinese New Year, February or early March
The last day of New Year celebrations, marked with lanterns and sweet rice dumplings (yuanxiao).
Labor Day holiday
The first days of May
A multi-day national holiday that sends huge domestic crowds to the Great Wall and Forbidden City. Plan to be elsewhere or book sites far ahead.
Mid-Autumn Festival
September or early October, varies by lunar calendar
Mooncakes and moon viewing. A public holiday that can merge with Golden Week in some years.
National Day Golden Week
October 1 to 7 every year
The busiest travel week in China. Tiananmen Square hosts a flag ceremony, but crowds at every major sight are overwhelming.
Harbin Ice and Snow World (side trip)
Roughly late December through February, weather permitting
A high-speed train ride north of Beijing, Harbin builds entire illuminated cities from ice each winter.
Beat the crowds
- Never plan big sights for October 1 to 7, the first days of May, or the week around Chinese New Year. Shift the whole trip a week either way.
- Book Palace Museum tickets the moment they open, and enter at the first time slot through the Meridian Gate. Walk straight to the back courtyards and work forward.
- Skip Badaling, the closest Great Wall section and the most crowded. Mutianyu or Jinshanling on a weekday morning is a very different experience.
- Midweek is noticeably quieter than weekends at every major site because domestic tourism dominates.
Open or closed
- The Palace Museum and many other museums close on Mondays, except during national holidays. Check before you plan the day.
- During the first days of Chinese New Year, many small restaurants and family businesses close; big sights, hotels, and malls stay open.
- Many sites now require advance online booking with passport details, and daily visitor caps can sell out on weekends and holidays.
- Outdoor sites like the Great Wall run shorter hours in winter. Some remote sections close in heavy snow or high wind.
With kids in tow
- Mutianyu is the most family-friendly Great Wall section: a cable car or chairlift up and a toboggan ride down.
- The Forbidden City is huge. Plan for half a day with kids, bring snacks and water, and pick a few courtyards rather than trying to see everything.
- Spring and fall weekdays are best with children: comfortable temperatures and fewer domestic school groups than summer.
- For homeschool families, the city is a direct lesson in Ming and Qing dynasty history, from the imperial palace to the Ming Tombs.
Getting there
- Beijing has two major airports: Capital International (PEK) and Daxing International (PKX). Nonstop flights from the US operate from several major hubs, mostly on Chinese carriers and United.
- From Texas, most travelers connect through a West Coast hub or a major Asian gateway.
- US passport holders generally need a visa for a standard visit, though China's visa-free transit policy can cover short stays on itineraries continuing to a third country. Check current rules before booking.
- High-speed trains link Beijing with Shanghai in about 4.5 to 6 hours, a good alternative to flying.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
Beijing timing, quick answers
What is the best month to visit Beijing?
September. The summer rain is over, the heat has broken, skies are clear, and Golden Week crowds have not yet arrived. Mid to late October and May are close seconds.
What is the cheapest time to visit Beijing?
December through early January and March, outside the Chinese New Year window. Hotels drop their rates and sights are quiet, though winter days are very cold.
When is Beijing most crowded?
The National Day Golden Week, October 1 to 7, followed by the early May Labor Day holiday and the Chinese New Year travel period. Summer school holidays in July and August are busy too.
When is the rainy season in Beijing?
July and August bring most of the year's rain, usually as heavy thunderstorms with hot, humid weather in between.
Is Beijing worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you dress for it. Highs hover near freezing and wind can bite, but skies are often clear, crowds are thin, and the Great Wall with a dusting of snow is memorable.
Is it a good idea to visit China during Golden Week?
Generally no. It is the busiest travel week of the year, hotel prices spike, and the major sights are packed. Arrive after October 7 instead.
