The straight answer

The best time to visit Vancouver is June through September, when the rain finally stops, the seawall and mountain trails are at their best, and long evenings run past 9pm; for skiing at Whistler, go January through March.

Go June through September. Vancouver's summer is one of the most reliable in North America: warm but rarely hot, with long dry stretches and daylight well past 9pm around the solstice. It is the season for cycling the Stanley Park seawall, hiking the North Shore mountains, kayaking False Creek, and taking the ferry to Vancouver Island.

The other eight months are defined by rain. From October through March, Vancouver gets the large majority of its annual rainfall, with November usually the wettest month. It rarely snows downtown and it is mild by Canadian standards, but gray, drizzly weeks are the norm. The upside: Whistler and the three local ski hills are an hour or two away, and hotel rates fall sharply.

Spring is the underrated window. From March into April, cherry blossoms line hundreds of city streets, the ski hills still have snow, and the crowds and prices of summer have not arrived. Pack a rain jacket and you get both sides of the city in one trip.

Why go to Vancouver

Mountains in the city

The North Shore peaks sit across the harbor from downtown. You can ski Grouse Mountain in the morning and eat dim sum in Richmond at night.

Stanley Park

A 1,000-acre forest park at the edge of downtown, ringed by the seawall, one of the best urban walking and cycling routes anywhere.

The food scene

Some of the best Chinese and Japanese food outside Asia, outstanding Pacific seafood, and a serious Indigenous and fusion restaurant scene.

The gateway to British Columbia

Whistler, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and Alaska cruises all start here. Vancouver is the natural base for all of them.

Beat the crowds

  • Ride the seawall and visit Granville Island before 10am in summer; cruise ship days bring waves of day visitors to downtown sights.
  • Book summer hotels well ahead: July and August downtown rates are among the highest in Canada, and Alaska cruise departures fill hotels on turnaround days.
  • Pick September over July. Weather is nearly as good and the crowds and prices drop right after Labour Day.
  • Swap Capilano for Lynn Canyon Park, a free suspension bridge and forest walk on the North Shore that many locals prefer.

Open or closed

  • Some mountain hiking trails, including the Grouse Grind, close in winter and typically open in late spring once snow clears. North Shore trails at elevation can hold snow into June.
  • Whistler's summer season (mountain biking, Peak 2 Peak gondola sightseeing) and ski season have short gaps in between, usually in spring and fall shoulder weeks. Check the resort calendar.
  • Canada Day on July 1 and BC Day, the first Monday in August, close some offices and shops and fill parks and beaches.
  • Almost nothing shuts down in the rainy season: museums, restaurants, and markets run year-round, which is why winter is a viable budget trip.

With kids in tow

  • Kids love the Stanley Park seawall on bikes, the aquarium, Science World, and the Granville Island water park and Kids Market.
  • Grouse Mountain in summer adds lumberjack shows and a grizzly refuge, and the Skyride itself is half the fun.
  • Pack rain gear for kids in any month outside summer; the city expects you to play outside in the drizzle, and the parks and beaches stay open.
  • For homeschool families, May and September are ideal: good weather, quiet weekdays, and marine biology, rainforest ecology, and Indigenous art at the Museum of Anthropology.

Getting there

  • Vancouver International (YVR) has nonstops from many US hubs, including Dallas, Houston, Denver, Chicago, and the West Coast; the Canada Line train reaches downtown in about 25 minutes.
  • Amtrak Cascades trains and buses connect Seattle to Vancouver in roughly four hours, and the drive is about three hours depending on the border crossing.
  • BC Ferries sail from Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay to Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast; summer weekends need reservations.

Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
